Description
Geoff and Susan Bull were early viticultural pioneers on the East Coast of Tasmania, establishing Freycinet Vineyard in 1979. It is situated adjacent to the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula, (latitude 42 degrees), which is named in honour of the French explorer Louis de Freycinet, who chartered the region in 1802. The 15 hectare vineyard is proudly family owned and the wines are 100% grown, produced and bottled on our estate. The site is a warm sheltered one within the truly cool Tasmanian climate. The vineyards are meticulously hand tended to grow moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit. The rustic winery houses ‘state of the art’ equipment to ensure wine quality is not lost. The wines are produced with great care, dedication and passion – they are a delicious liquid expression of our unique place on earth, the varieties and the season.
From the winemakers: “This wine is named after iconic Wineglass Bay situated on the spectacular Freycinet Peninsula nearby. It is produced from meticulously tended 34 year old vines, all hand pruned and hand harvested. Viticulturally the aim is to grow a moderate yield of fully ripe healthy fruit. Our cool climate enables a long, slow ripening season producing remarkable intensity of aroma and flavour plus excellent natural acidity balance in the fruit.
“The aim in the winery is to harness this fruit purity in such a way that it leaps out of the glass and provides considerable drinking pleasure. This is achieved through gentle handling along with slow fermentation at cool temperatures. To provide an extra dimension of creamy texture and complexity, 60% of this wine was fermented and matured in predominately seasoned French barriques, with a small percentage of new oak giving the wine subtle structure and length. Texture and complexity is enhanced without obvious oak characters. Being older barrels, the texture and complexity is enhanced without obvious oak characters.”
“The 2022 vintage was one of the coolest, wettest seasons experienced on the east coast with long, slow ripening and low yields. Lower sunshine and warmth have ensured superb concentration of flavours, excellent natural acid retention and an extra degree of elegance and finesse in the wines.
“The wine is lively and exuberant featuring vibrant gooseberry, citrus and passionfruit aromas. The generous palate is awash with an array of tropical fruits, ruby grapefruit and soft herbs and offers a creamy smooth mid palate with subtle layers of complexity and impressive length.”
92 points, James Halliday “Partial fermentation in used French oak for a moderately intense presentation of green bean and gooseberry flavours framed by steely acidity.”
93 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “There’s a bit of drama here. It’s both punchy with flavour and has a bit of brood to it. Grass, steel, passionfruit and toast with mango and gravel in there too. Gravity to this. Presence.”
