Description
Skillogalee wines produce top class Clare Valley riesling. Skillogalee took its name from legend that goes back to the 1840’s when explorer/pioneer, John Horrocks became lost and survived on a `Skilly’ (gaelic word meaning broth) made of grass and seeds.
From the winemaker … “The grapes for this dry Riesling were grown on low-yielding vines, on the highest slopes of the Skillogalee estate (about 500 metres above sea level). The family-owned vineyard is managed in accordance with sustainable farming practices. Despite it being a relatively dry and warm growing season, Riesling was again one of the highlights of the 2016 Clare Valley vintage. Newly released 2016 Riesling has the goods…
The wine is straw like in appearance, with a green tinge. The nose has a perfumed lift of white flowers, lime blossom and musk. The palate is full-flavoured with pronounced fruit weight and texture. Flavours of Tahitian lime zest and pith prevail, with hints of citrus spice and succulent, juicy acidity emerging thereafter. Structurally, this wine has impressive length, a lively natural acid backbone and a mouth-wateringly powerful finish.” Alc 12.7%
Toni Paterson MW for The Real Review said this about 2016 Clare rieslings … “… impressive across the board having purity, intensity and length. Varietal character is strong and the acid balance is such that they are lovely in their youth as well having ageing potential.”
92 points and Wine of The Week, Toni Patterson, The Real Review “You will get drawn in immediately by the expressive aroma of lemongrass, ripe gooseberry and sweet lime, plus a heady note reminiscent of wisteria. The palate is full and powerful, with a core of juicy lemon flavours. I like the opulence and roundness of the mid-palate and the flavoursome pithiness of the finish. The strong line of acidity supports and lengthens the wine.
While completely lovely now, I would be keen to see it with age, particularly in the mid-term. I expect it will mature into a complex and intensely flavoured wine. (Screwcap). 12.5% alc. 2017 – 2026″
