Alfredo and Katrina Pizzini built Pizzini Wines based on their passions and their commitment to family and Pizzini’s Italian heritage and have been grape growers in the King Valley for over 30 years, with a substantial vineyard. Their winemaking dream began in 1978 when they planted their first vines, then in 1994 their first wine under the Pizzini label was produced. It is not surprising that their wines should span both Italian and traditional varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Arneis, Prosecco, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. It’s these Italian varieties that put the King Valley in a class of its own in the Australian wine industry. No other region is growing the diversity and quantity of Italian grape varieties, backed up by a wine community with deep roots in Italy. Their wines rank high among the many King Valley producers.
Today their four adult children Natalie, Joel, Carlo and Nicole all work in the business alongside Alfredo and Katrina.
In 2011 Pizzini quietly released a new range of wines under the Lana label which are distinctly Italian in style. These wines are made by son, Joel Pizzini. Joel is using some old winemaking techniques to make these wines so that some of them show more funky, earthy and savoury notes to the wines in the Pizzini range. These wines are made to be enjoyed with food, especially dishes with Italian flavours.
Made from fruit grown in the King Valley in Victoria’s High Country, a region known for the production of quality, modern Italian wine styles.
2016 was a great vintage and Pizzini say it was their best to date! An Italy-meets-Australia Pinot Grigio, fragrant with pear, white peach and spice aromas that flow through a succulent mouthful with a savoury, dry signature. The colour is pale straw with olive green hue. Aromas include lemon zest and spices with earthy and funky notes developing as the wine opens in the glass. The palate is round and soft with lingering, lemony acidity. This wine has a lovely weight and texture.
