James Kellie (formerly of Howard Park) has had extraordinary success in a relatively short time, winning trophies galore and for 10 consecutive years the elusive 5 red star rating (the highest recognition possible from James Halliday’s, Wine Companion awarded to Australia’s top 5% of wineries for “a consistent record of excellence”.).
The Great Southern wine growing region of WA provides unmatched versatility and quality for a winemaker. The elegance and delicacy of cool climate Riesling is on show with James Kellie showcasing the subregional releases of Porongurups, Mt Barker and Denmark. These gorgeous dry Rieslings are as pristine and crystalline as the spectacularly beautiful and remote landscape.
From the winemaker: “The grapes for this wine were sourced from a single vineyard in the Mount Barker sub region of Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region. Only the finest, more pristine, “free-run” juice was used in the production of this wine resulting in a palate of outstanding finesse, free from the harsh, phenolic characters and deeper colours associated with grape pressings. A long, cool ferment in stainless steel tanks, minimal fining and the use of screw caps are all further steps towards capturing the inherent delicacy of this cool climate variety.”
A brilliant, exceptionally pale straw colour with youthful green tinges. The wine exhibits intense floral, citrus and talc notes enhanced by an underlying spicy vibrancy. A seamless palate, with initial flavours of passionfruit and mandarin leading to a spicy mid-palate with hints of nectarine finishing with classic mouth-watering citrus. The fine structure is testament to the care taken during this wines production. Tasted this in August 2017 and after 12 months in bottle this is singing! Riesling of this pedigree and class is an absolute bargain.. Enjoy! Stock is Limited
96 points James Halliday’s 2018 Australian Wine Companion “A warmer expression of apricot, quince and ripe apple, threaded with a spicy after-tang of ginger, this coats the mouth with an uncanny Germanic richness despite its delicacy. Natural acidity reverberates across the cheeks, pulling the flavours long and sinuous. An effortless drink, fully validating Harewood’s decision to showcase the disparate voices of the Great Southern GI’s subregions.” RRP $27
