Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay 2019
Stunning Mornington Chardonnay and one of their best yet!
Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced predominantly from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and like their labels, very cool!
A drop-dead gorgeous follow-up to the 2018, the Terre Maritime is drawn from a few rows of Chardonnay sited in the top corner of Merricks Grove. Barney has always felt this parcel could result in a superb and unique Chardonnay–in this part of the vineyard, the 24-year-old vines are rooted in brown soils rather than the more common reddish dirt of the area. The parcel also faces slightly east, offering the vines a cooler, more sheltered aspect. There is therefore less vigour than in the rest of the vineyard, and the bunches are a touch smaller. As a result, the fruit from this parcel tends to make a wine that has real power and intensity without forgoing the finesse which we always associate with Barney’s wines.
This is just the third release of Terre Maritime and it has only strengthened Barney’s decision to keep this parcel separate. Raised in a single 500-litre François Frères puncheon, it’s a stunning Mornington Chardonnay with a great bouquet of fresh white peaches together with compelling notes of oyster shell and gunflint unfolding from the glass. The palate is intense, beautifully delineated and long. Without question, one of the most impressive (if not the best) Chardonnays we have seen from Garagiste. With only 55-odd cases to go around we can’t see it lasting long.
Brand new vintage!
Reviews of the 2018 – 95 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Straight to the pool room with this one. Beautiful chardonnay. Terrific intensity. Brine, white peach, chalk, steel, lime spider, cedarwood and mineral. Flint too, nothing excessive but enough. Intensity is the thing. And length. Texture takes care of itself. One sip and a word escaped my lips. Hello, I said.”
94 points, Ned Goodwin, Australian Wine Companion “A limey green glint segues to a flinty vibrancy of curd, lanolin and lemon drop. This is racy, yet generous and juicy all at once; the phalanx of maritime salinity and acidity far from forced, but merely seducing the flavours to a long energetic finish across a vanillin praline core.”
