5 Star Outstanding Winery from James Halliday, voted Top 10 Dark Horse Wineries in Australian Wine Companion and winemaker Anna Hooper was named in Top 12 “Young Guns of Wine” for 2017.
Cape Jaffa winery and vineyard sits atop cave pocketed limestone on the very edge of the South Australian coastline – formed from the remains of coral and long forgotten ocean creatures as the sea made it’s retreat as recently as two million years ago. A unique and isolated post, approximately 30kms North of Robe, and 300km from Adelaide, Cape Jaffa wines are made with heart, earth and salt air.
To winemakers Derek and Anna Hooper choosing Cape Jaffa just felt right. Red loamy soil, free-draining Limestone, cool Summers and some great local surf breaks tipped the scales as they pioneered the Mount Benson wine region.
Their commitment to sustainable agricultural practices through organics and biodynamics (their vineyards are Certified Biodynamic) plus their love of the sea and sense of place is reflected in the wines they make.
From the winemakers … “Sourced close to the ocean from what we believe are some of the best sites for Sauvignon Blanc in Australia. The grapes are picked in two stages to get a mix of ripe tropical notes and herbaceous lift. The wine is treated carefully to maintain and enhance its naturally lifted aromas. We aim to get the balance right in the wine to create a refreshing wine that tastes good with our local crayfish, or just by itself.”
100% Mount Benson fruit. Crisp and lively, this is a great food wine … or as Cape Jaffa says ” A wine that is alive, for food that’s alive! This includes chilli, lemongrass and all those delicious south east asian flavours.”
Great follow up to highly awarded 2015 vintage which won Gold at Adelaide and Melbourne Wine Shows.
90 points, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion “It’s not overtly tropical and has texture. A compact mix of lemongrass, lime juice, citrus zest and herbs with a tangy lemon-sherbet acid line, a lick of sweetness and phenolics rounding out the savoury palate.”
Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front: “Perfumed. Expressive. Fruit-driven and accessible but with plenty of drive. Almost tending into ‘steely’ territory, particularly through the finish, but the mainstay is all about lively tropical/passionfruit-like fruit.”
