“A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. Due to family upheaval this source is now gone but has been supplemented by various sites throughout the Barossa Region that he has identified as significant and unique.
All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk. As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label.
Stylistically Dan’s wines are as profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension.

The Standish Shiraz is a single vineyard wine sourced from old vine Greenock vineyard on ironstone soils.
“Every now and then we humble winegrowers receive a gift from the grape gods in the form of a perfect vintage growing season. I feel that 2016 was precisely that, with a very dry winter and spring lead up to harvest and some serendipitous rainfall in late January.
As such, 2016 afforded the rare combination of rich palate filling wines of beautifully ripe tannins as well as the freshness of alluring graceful aromatics. Yielding four absolute standout parcels, certainly some of the best offerings I have ever seen from these particular vineyard sites.” Dan Standish, winemaker.

It’s inky in colour, loaded with plum, blueberry and raspberry fruit. Full-bodied, creamy-textured and rich, it’s intense, concentrated and long beyond belief, picking up hints of licorice along the way. Nearly embryonic, it will need at least a couple of years to show more than the primary fruit.”

Full bodied, thick with sheets of dense, compact tannin, almost a slaty feel here, well-bedded acidity, and for all the thunder, there’s something of a petrichor perfume going on in the mouth, along with scrub herbs. The finish rolls on and on, and is slick with tannin, and fresh ‘minerally’ acidity. Enriched by glorious tannin, fragrance and spice of Shiraz, and regional earthiness: it’s a fantastic expression of the Barossa.”
