Yves Cuilleron Saint Joseph ‘Les Pierres Sèches’ Syrah 2016
6 PACK BUY. Best vintage in 30 years of winemaking says Yves Cuilleron. Don’t miss out.
“Yves Cuilleron is a superstar of the Northern Rhône” thewinedoctor.com
In 1987 Yves took over his family wine estate (after 4 generations) located in Verlieu (in the town of Chavanay) and since that time he has built an entirely new winery. He has acquired additional vineyards (domaine is now 52 hectares) that cover appellations, including Saint Joseph, Cote Rotie, Cornas, Condrieu, Saint Péray and a series of Vin de Pays from the Collines Rhodaniennes.
His philosophy in the vineyard is simple and very much a sustainable approach, no insecticides/pesticides only organic ones, majority is high density planted (competition between vines enhances fruit quality), handpicked fruit (much of vineyard is on terraces). Similarly in the winery a natural approach: wild yeasts, no additions, open fermenters (temperature controlled), maturation in french oak barriques and foudres (his wines are more about purity of fruit and he goes easy on the oak).
Pierres Seches refers to the dry stone walls that hold up the terraces. This wine is aged for 18 months in older barriques. Another excellent vintage in 2016 – a more classic and restrained vintage compared to 2015, quality fruit producing wines of freshness, fine tannic structure with excellent aromas.
We are thrilled with this new release… Do not miss out !
Review on previous vintage 2015 … Vinous Media – 90-92 points: “Deep ruby. Smoke- and spice-tinged blackberry and dried cherry aromas are enlivened by a suave floral topnote. Nicely concentrated cassis, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors are complemented by a touch of succulent herbs and a building floral pastille note. Finishes chewy and long, with dusty tannins coming in late to add shape and grip.”
