Description
“Yarra Valley pioneers, the de Pury family are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce. Produced from some of the oldest vines in the valley, these are long-lived wines made in tiny quantities. Yeringberg makes wines from the low-yielding vines re-established on the heart of what was one of the most famous vineyards of the nineteenth century. In the riper years, the red wines have a velvety generosity of flavour which is rarely encountered, yet never lose varietal character, while the Yeringberg White takes students of history back to Yeringberg’s fame in the nineteenth century.” – James Halliday
Guill de Pury grew up beside the out-of-operation 19th-century winery in Coldstream where a lack of interest in fine table wines had caused production to cease in 1921. In 1969, Guill and wife Katherine decided to replant the vineyard and start again, and gradually restored the reputation of this great Australian estate. Guill has since handed over chief responsibility for the wines to daughter Sandra de Pury.
From the winemaker … “Cabernet Sauvignon 55%, Cabernet Franc 13%, Merlot 13%, Petit Verdot 10%, Malbec 9%. A wine that really shines in 2019, our latest Yeringberg blend combines depth, structure and generosity, with the elegance and refinement that we expect in this wine. The nose offers aromas of cassis, violets, plum and bay leaf, interwoven with notes of roasted capsicum, cigar box, Christmas cake and mint — it’s deep, rich and almost exotic, while also cool, svelte and perfectly controlled. The palate has floral, plummy richness and – this year in particular – a wonderfully savoury, almost mineral structure that’s taut, fresh, lively and long. It has an authority that absolutely commands your attention. A wine that needs some air today, and certainly one to enjoy over the next 15-20 years. “ – Sandra de Pury
97 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday’s Wine Companion “This was tasted less than a month after it was bottled and while it’s a very fine Yeringberg with its beauty on show, it’s reserved and needs time to adjust and settle. Everything is in sync. Lovely aromas of violets, autumn leaves, mulberries and more. The medium-bodied palate is layered with fine, textural tannins, dazzled with fresh acidity and exceptional length.”
