SPECIAL BUY 6 or more. 2nd label of Yarra Yering. New Vintage on song! 95 points, Halliday
Description
Second label of Yarra Yering made by Sarah Crowe, James Halliday’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year.
The Warramate vineyard was first planted in 1969 on a spectacular north-facing slope overlooking the central Yarra Valley. The site adjoins the Yarra Yering vineyard located above. On the other side of Maddens Lane, there is Yeringberg and Mount Mary. Pedigree in spades here in the Yarra Valley’s finest dirt.
50+year old low yielding vines are delivering fabulous results with this 2020 release – a fantastic vintage.
Declassified Yarra Yering No 2 fruit goes into this wine too!
2021 is here. All fruit at Warramate is hand-picked and once delivered to the winery placed in a cool room overnight. Processing the following day a series of bunch ferments and whole berry ferments are employed. All in open fermenters of 600kg to 2000kg. Hand plunging for gentle extraction and gently pressed. Maturation time in barrel was 15 months prior to bottling. 100% French oak, utilizing a mixture of hogsheads and barriques, only 20% new barrels.
Notes from the winemaker about the 2021: “Violets and plummy fruits make for a lively, generously fruitful wine entwined with a pink peppercorn spice element. An elegant style reflecting its cool climate origins, it’s medium bodied weight, a cool undercurrent of blue fruits, the succulent and richly layered palate is supported by some stalk tannin firmness.”
Gorgeous syrah, medium weight, brims with fragrance, spice, dark fruits, plushness balanced by juicy acid freshness. Cool climate syrah at its finest, made with the same techniques as the Yarra Yering wines. Quality bargain to be had here and absolutely delicious.
95 points, Ned Goodwin for James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “A stellar expression of Yarra syrah. Blueberry fruit, a gentle whiff of violet-scented tension, star anise, cracked pepper and a sensitive winemaking hand that has opted for real extraction and poised tannic mettle, rather than excessive reductive handling to confer tension. This is a much more rewarding option. The palate juicy; the fruit pulpy; the tannins firm, conferring a gentle scrape of authority.”
