Verget du Sud Rose de la Terre 2016
SPECIAL DOZEN BUY. For lovers of Provençal rosé
Jean-Marie Guffens is sometimes called a genius white wine maker after having received the exclusive 3 star ranking in Le Classement, France’s most respected wine publication (achieved by 56 domaines out of 1300!) with his white burgundy. He now is driven to achieve the same reputation for his Provençal, southern french rosé.
Jean-Marie Guffens’ Verget rosé has had more name changes than hot dinners. We’re assured its current incarnation is here to stay…for a while at least. Some things change, but some things stay the same; with its mouth-watering watermelon and berry scents, and redcurrant acidity, this delicious, textural-crisp Provençal-styled rosé is right on form.
Previously labeled “Méditerranée” this blend of Grenache and Syrah (50:50) is now also categorised as a Vin de France. It’s drawn from two limestone-rich vineyards in Apt, high in the Provençal hinterland, selected, managed and harvested specifically for this rosé. The wines are fermented and aged in Guffen’s horizontal stainless fermenters, on lees, for eight months with a little saignée juice blended for textural complexity. Simply, it’s a racy and mineral Provençal style with silky ripe berry and crushed, fresh herb notes, a deliciously chewy texture, and a long tangy close.
