Trediberri Barolo 2016
SPECIAL BUY 6 OR MORE. Outstanding vintage.. 94 points Galloni
Trediberri translates in italiano as the three from Berri (a little hamlet of La Morra, the highest town in Barolo and renowned for wines of elegance and refinement).
Father and son team Frederico & Nicola Oberto and friend Vladimiro Rambaldi (a banker) make up the trio and back in 2008 they purchased 5ha of Berri vineyards in La Morra. Anna Rosa Oberto (wife/mother) is also hands on pruning vines fastidiously when not working at the post office. The Oberto family also have 2ha of one of premium Barolo cru: Rocche dell’Annunziata. Their new winery in the village of Torriglione overlooks the vineyard.
Nic Oberto oversees the winemaking at Trediberri with his father Federico (following his retirement from Renato Ratti after several decades) and Enologist Livio Taretto, and Nic’s fiancée Stefania Drocco, plays an increasingly important role in the overall Trediberri story. Since 2012 Trediberri winery has been certified by CCPB srl, Bologna as in conversion to organic.
This new kid on the block is making some brilliant wines and I enjoyed them too much over lunch in a recent Barolo trip in January and was again highly impressed in a recent Sydney tasting.
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media, Feb 2018. … “Trediberri is a new entry in the Piedmont landscape. Proprietor Frederico Oberto who previously worked at Renato Ratti, along with his son, Nicola, and friend Vladimiro Rambaldi make elegant, classically inspired Barolos from vineyards in La Morra. Nicola Oberto is young and brimming with both passion and enthusiasm, all qualities that make Trediberri an estate to watch. These wines are just gorgeous.”
Andrew Jefford named Trediberri amongst his “Five Outstanding Barolo & Barbaresco Producers for Value” August ’15
An outstanding vintage in 2016 … From the winemakers “one of the most amazing vintages of the last decade … low temperatures throughout the whole season .. warmth above average – which is really good for Nebbiolo .. a late harvest, with high amount of sugar + amazing color extraction, amazing fruit. 2016 is one of those vintages that producers would never get bored to deal with.”
As Antonio Galloni put it, “Right time, right place” … everything fell into place place resulting in superbly balanced, textural and multi-layered wines. The reds showed perfect phenolic maturity, whilst maintaining superb acid balance, generous bouquets and magnificently fine tannins. It is widely anticipated that 2016 is a vintage which will be talked about for a long time to come! Antonio Galloni – Trediberri’s 2016s, “Nicola Oberto is one of the most dynamic, emerging producers in Piedmont today ..”
I will not forget the infectious enthusiasm of winemaker Nic Oberta when tasting this fabulous wine with him at winery last year.. Do not miss this absolute bargain … for a limited time!
94 Points, Antonio Galloni , Vinous, Feb 2020 “The 2016 Barolo is a powerful, deep wine that is going to need time to soften and further open up. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, dried herbs and menthol infuse the 2016 with notable aromatic depth as well as a palpable sense of brooding, virile intensity to match its classically built, mid-weight structure. This is an especially potent vintage for the straight Barolo, and there is clearly so much going on in the glass; it is a superb wine in the making. The Barolo is a blend of 80% Berri and 20% Rocche dell’Annunziata.”
95 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Fine wines from Trediberri, most often delivered with a lighter touch. All La Morra, I believe, and unlike many from this great sub-zone, not ruined by influence of barrique. If only more would do the same. It’s still fine, red fruited and perfumed, but there’s an extra dimension of power and vitality in 2016. Cherry, new leather, liquorice root, mint and sage. Tannin is sure and has a graphite quality, and while there’s this cherry/plum candy succulence, it’s also pretty tense and tightly wound as a youngster. Acidity is fresh. Finish is long and clean, with brick dust tannin trailing. In short, the answer is yes.”
