Te Mata Estate Awatea Cabernets Merlot 2017
SPECIAL BUY 6 or more. Leading Hawkes Bay NZ producer. 95 points “succulent and beautifully rounded”
Established in 1896, Te Mata Estate remains family owned, producing internationally recognized wines exclusively from its Hawke’s Bay vineyards. The Estate’s ownership varied frequently until John and Wendy Buck acquired it in 1978. John and Wendy instigated a twenty-year development program, which commenced with the restoration of the original winery building and the replanting of all of the original vineyards, as well as the acquisition of new vineyard sites.
The range of temperature and soil types, allied with the rainfall band between 650-850mm, create conditions to produce high quality wines of a classic range akin to those of coastal, central and northern France. Te Mata wines are similar in weight and balance but with unique lifted floral and fruit aromas.
Te Mata winery has been ranked ‘Top Winery in New Zealand’ evidenced by the consistent quality of the Coleraine and Awatea Cabernet Merlot wines, the Bull Nose Syrah and the Elston Chardonnay.
Awatea takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning “Eye of the Dawn”) that sailed the Auckland – Sydney – Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
The 2017 Awatea is 56% cabernet sauvignon, 39% merlot, 5% cabernet franc. The separate parcels of grapes were destemmed before a traditional warm, plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to new and seasoned French oak barrels for 16 months’ ageing. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The separate wines were blended in January 2018, then returned to barrel for their second winter. The finished wine was then egg white fined and bottled in October 2018.
Ink-dark crimson, Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’17 glimmers with bright raspberry, cherry and blackberry sparkling over mocha, cedar and spice. Always a favourite expression of fine Hawke’s Bay cabernet, Awatea from 2017 is refreshing and moreish as well as typically elegant. Aromas of red and dark berry fruit, flashes of boysenberry and espresso on the palate, and a classical, super-fine, tannin structure running through to its long finish make Awatea Cabernets/Merlot 2017 a true star.
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Black fruit, tobacco, dried flower perfume, cocoa with a sprinkle of baking spice. It’s proudly medium-bodied, light but lithe and well-knit. Mineral feel and lead pencil savoury stuff, a little redcurrant and cool acidity, firm and dry tannin, dried herb and delightful clarety mouth-perfume, sure length and mocha in the aftertaste. Wonderful wine. So adult. So poised and sure-footed.”
95 Points, Sam Kim, wineorbit.co.nz, March 2019 “The wine offers splendid juicy fruit attack on the nose, showing dark plum and raspberry coulis characters with nuances of toasted almond, thyme and mixed spice. The palate is succulent and beautifully rounded, offering lovely flow and supple texture. Wonderfully composed and elegantly expressed with loads of delectable flavours, superbly structured by polished tannins. Delicious already with a potential to evolve gracefully. ”
4.5 star, Michael Cooper “Compared with Coleraine, Awatea is less dense but more approachable in its youth. Fragrant and refined, this full-bodied (13% alc/vol) blend has ripe-cassis, red-berry, plum and spice flavours, in a less fruit-crammed, markedly more savoury and earthy style than most Hawke’s Bay reds. Best drinking 2022-plus.”
