Description
Sons of Eden are rising stars of the Barossa. Co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 yrs) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) can do no wrong!
Freya was the foremost legendary Goddess of ancient Germanic lands where the Riesling grape originated. This single vineyard wine honours early German settlers who cultivated the Riesling vine in the exemplary micro-climate of South Australia’s Eden Valley.
About the 2020 vintage by the winemakers: “Significantly lower than average yields due to a very poor Eden Valley fruit set and one of the driest Spring and Summer periods on record. The small crops also lead to a very early start to the Riesling harvest, with harvest almost completed by the end of February. Despite the challenges, the fruit was harvested in excellent condition, retaining some fantastic natural acidity and ripe flavours.”
There are three Eden Valley Riesling Vineyards that contribute to the 2020 Freya blend (vines 22-45 years of age). Two are situated within the cooler section of Eden Valley, referred to as the Craneford sub-region at 430m and 460m altitude respectively. The third is located in the much cooler, higher altitude High-Eden sub-region at 500m altitude.
The vineyards are all hand-harvested in the cool of the morning and then chilled to a further 6ºC before being gently pressed.
100% whole-bunch and berry pressed with only the finest pressings retained. The juice was settled cold and racked clear to begin fermentation. Fermented cool at 12-14C for 3 weeks before finishing sugar-dry. To promote palate texture the wine was held on yeast lees for a further 3 months before being bottled.
Winemaker notes: “Bursting with lemon, melon and lime aromas with a touch of lavender undertone. A refreshing and bright palate with lovely mid-palate flesh, finishing with zest and crunchy acidity. A delicious wine, approachable upon release this wine will also mature very well for many years to come.”

96 points and Top 100 Value Wines of 2020 by Nick Stock for jamessuckling.com “A very finely detailed nose with lemon, lime, light pepper, crushed stones, apple blossom, flint and chalk. The palate has a superb delivery of super long, elegant yet powerful lemon, apple and grapefruit flavors. Fresh and focused finish. Concentrated.”
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Lime, white flower perfume, a dusting of pepper and spice, green apple. It’s quite tight, but has an approachable nature, lime zest and green apple, stony and lightly chalky, frisky but flavoursome, with preserved lemon and pith running on a long finish. Delicious wine. Has grip and energy, and a subtle come-hither personality.”
