Skillogalee Clare Valley Riesling 2019
SPECIAL 6 BOTTLE BUY OR MORE Built to last, great acidity. Top class Clare Valley riesling.
Skillogalee wines produce top class Clare Valley riesling. Skillogalee took its name from legend that goes back to the 1840’s when explorer/pioneer, John Horrocks became lost and survived on a `Skilly’ (gaelic word meaning broth) made of grass and seeds.
Skillogalee was established in 1970 with the first wines released in 1976. The 1978 dry riesling won major trophies at the Adelaide Wine Show and the National Wine Show, putting Skillogalee firmly on the Australian winemaking map! The vineyards were planted in the early 1970s on what was then, at almost 500 metres above sea level, one of the highest vineyards in South Australia. The rows are planted on the contour in shallow stony soils mainly on steep eastern facing slopes.
The vines are hand-pruned and the fruit is mainly hand-picked. Yields are extremely low but the vineyard produces intense flavours and aromas and deep, richly-coloured reds.
From the winemaker about this vintage… “The grapes for this dry Riesling were grown on low-yielding vines, on the highest slopes of the Skillogalee estate (about 500 metres above sea level). The family-owned vineyard is managed in accordance with sustainable farming practices. Despite it being a relatively dry and warm growing season, Riesling was again one of the highlights of the 2018 Clare Valley vintage. Vintage 2019 was a later vintage than recent years allowing plenty of time for flavour development.
The wine is bright straw in appearance, with a green tinge. The nose has a perfumed lift of jasmine, orange blossom spice and lemon zest. The palate is full-flavoured with excellent fruit concentration and texture. Flavours of lemon/lime zest and pith prevail, with hints of citrus spice and succulent, juicy acidity emerging thereafter. Structurally, this wine has impressive length, a lively natural acid backbone and a mouth-wateringly powerful finish.
Drink now with fish, seafood or white meat dishes, or cellar for up to 10 years.” Alc 13%
Toni Paterson MW for The Real Review said this about 2016 Clare rieslings … “… impressive across the board having purity, intensity and length. Varietal character is strong and the acid balance is such that they are lovely in their youth as well having ageing potential.”
91 points, James Halliday “Produced from old, low-yielding vines on the highest slopes of the estate at around 500m, picked progressively as the desired ripeness for each of the contour parcels was reached. Full of ripe, juicy citrus fruits of all kinds, acidity a subtext throughout the length of the wine.”
