Description
“I find it difficult to think of any wine anywhere that has changed as little over the last 30 years as San Leonardo, surely the most successful Bordeaux blend of northern Italy.” Jancis Robinson, 2012
“The San Leonardo estate has been producing some of Italy’s finest Bordeaux style wines for generations.” Nicolas Belfrage, World of Fine Wines 2009
“San Leonardo is one of the great wines of Italy.” Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate December, 2014
“This blockbuster Bordeaux Blend from Trentino is clearly the Sassicaia of the north.” James Suckling, Wine Spectator, 2001
Described by Gambero Rosso as one of the “fifty wineries that changed Italy,” it is impossible not to be captivated by the sheer beauty of San Leonardo. Established in 1770 with the Dolomites serving as an imposing backdrop, the estate includes protected parkland, a stunning villa (headquarters of the counterespionage section of the German high command during WWII), a museum, the original Roman road to Austria and a cellar to rival any Bordeaux chateau. The comparisons with Bordeaux do not end there, for the wine could easily pass as cru classé left bank. Jancis Robinson has described San Leonardo as “Trentino’s first growth”
Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga inherited the estate in 1974. He is a trained oenologist & spent eight years working with his relative Mario Incisa della Rocchetta at San Guido in Tuscany of Sassicaia fame no doubt a major influence on the direction Gonzaga took with San Leonardo. The wine that became an Italian classic is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Carmenere, released only in the best vintages. Terre is the junior sibling, more fruit forward with ripe plum, dark cherry, spice, leather and Trentino’s classic mineral backbone.
18/20, Jancis Robinson “A particularly early start to the season, with flowering around 20 May, thus avoiding the two main rainfalls in June. In fact, during this period, the most important rainfall of the season (150 mm) was concentrated with an average temperature not exceeding 18 °C. This rainy season brought the season into line with normal trends with veraison beginning around 18 July. August and September were dry, with a significant diurnal range which allows for a perfect ripening. The harvest started on 20 September with Merlot and resumed after a short break of a few days to allow the complete ripening of the Cabernets, and ended on 10 October. Half bottles: 2,480; bottles: 55,000, magnums: 3,400; double magnums: 200; imperials: 40; salmanazars: 30; balthazars: 10; melchiors: 1.
Notably dark crimson. The nose hints at warm beeswax. Fine tannins and lots of ripe red-fruit flavours. The construction of this wine is beautiful but it’s still fairly embryonic. You would want to serve it with some chewy food if you opened a bottle now. Extraordinary density of fully ripe fruit but masses of energy so it certainly isn’t heavy. Great balance.”
93 points, The Wine Advocate “The 2011 San Leonardo (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot) is another landmark edition of this celebrated wine. This warm vintage has shaped a slightly more opulent and succulent expression with dark fruit nuances of blackberry and Morello cherry. The bouquet is intense and exuberant. Delicate layers of spice, leather and tobacco give volume at the back. Like most past vintages of San Leonardo, this wine is difficult to taste at such a young age. It is built to last and it would be a horrible shame to pull the cork before the wine has reached its prime. For that, I suggest another ten years of cellar aging (at a minimum).”
