What started as a part time job to earn a few dollars during his university days turned into a committed obsession. Winemaker Michael Aylward honed his craft at his family owned winery, Kooyong, spending time out in the vineyard, in the winery and on the road and the net result was a desire to make this his career. Following the sale of Kooyong in 2003 the next chapter began back in business with his parents to form Ocean Eight taking on the role of Winemaker and General Manager. Mike undertook several study tours amongst the he hallowed vineyards and cellars of Burgundy.
In 2011 he won the highly coveted “Young Gun Of Wine” award. Leading wine writers Max Allen, Philip Rich and Nick Stock judged this competition. 100% estate grown fruit, wild ferments
Finesse, purity, elegance, detail are the hallmarks of this fine Mornington producer’s Pinot Noir.
Winemaker notes: “2015 Vintage will be heralded on the Mornington Peninsula as one of the greatest pinot noir growing vintages of the past 2 decades. Conditions for vineyard canopy growth, fruit development and harvest conditions were text book. This enabled us to make exceptionally perfumed pinots with beautiful red fruits that give the signature of fine Mornington Peninsula pinot noir.
Again we take our hats off to our vineyard manager Luke O’Connor that masterfully managed our 13 acres of pinot noir vines. Our vines have now reached 20 years of age and we are tasting exciting flavours and textures that derive from our particular pinot noir site. This wine has developed beautifully in bottle over the past 18months and will be a delicious drink for many years to come….”
This fine Pinot really is all class .. Mornington Pinot at its finest and bargain for quality and value here. Last of the 2015 stocks so be quick !
96 Points – Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak “… Very fine nose with amazing aromatics: red cherries, leafy notes, some green tea. Beguiling. Fresh red cherries on the palate with amazing purity and elegance. Delicate with fine tannins and a hint of bitter cherry on the finish. Such a lovely, delicate wine with amazing finesse. So transparent.’
92 points, James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2019 “Pinot noir in fine china mode, though with a twist of cloudiness to the colour. It’s earthen, undergrowthy, liberally spiced and cherried, its inherent complexity both freshened and straightened by crisp acidity.”
