Noemia J Alberto Malbec 2018
Special 6 pack price. Patagonia malbec of extraordinary purity! 9
This leading Patagonia winery is located in Rio Negro Valley, 620 miles south of Buenos Aires in the middle of the desert of Patagonia, Argentina. The climate is bone dry with just seven inches of rain each year. The dry climate with a maximum humidity of 30% keeps the area free of disease; the atmosphere is pristine, pure and unpolluted. Winemaker, Hans Vinding-Diers (Danish, Bordeaux-trained, cousin of Peter Sisseck of Pingus fame in Espana) is fanatical as far as attention to detail goes- biodynamic viticulture, hand harvesting and gravity driven vinification. He joined forces with italiana Noemi Marone- Cinzano (part of the Cinzano family) in this exciting venture.
The hallmark of this bodega is “elegancia”, a seamless palate of balance and finesse – not big tannic blockbusters often typical of Mendoza.
Fruit is sourced from their Patagonia vineyard planted in 1955, Minuscule yields imparting intensity, depth of fruit and velvety mouthfeel followed by maturation in French oak. Wow this 2018 release has the goods .. top shelf ‘tinto’ (95% Malbec, 5% Merlot) displays extraordinary purity of fruit, pin point focus, depth that flows seamlessly, fine grained tannins and gorgeous integration of oak. Halleluia to this fine wine, up there with the finest from Argentina!
” They consider their 2018 J Alberto their premier cru in the Burgundian pyramid of quality. It comes from an old, ungrafted 4.5-hectare vineyard planted with a field blend that is mostly Malbec with some 5% Merlot that is cultivated organically and certified by Ecocert. 2018 saw a cold and wet spring with some hail before the harvest, which resulted in half the normal crop. It fermented with 25% full clusters and 20% crushed berries with their own cultivated yeasts. Fifteen percent of the volume was raised in concrete eggs, 40% in used French barriques, 10% in demi-muids and the rest in stainless steel for ten months. The wine is harmonious, combining elegance with power, and the oak felt perfectly integrated but enhanced the texture. This has very good freshness and continues in the path of lightness from the previous vintage.” Oct 2019

94 points, Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate: “The insultingly young 2015 J Alberto is the most backward of the three wines I tasted on this occasion. It comes from four hectares of vines planted in 1955 with an ungrafted massale field blend selection, mostly Malbec but with some 5% Merlot, what was planted at the time in Manque, Rio Negro. The vineyard has five seperate plots that are managed and harvested differently, as they have different soil characteristics, all organically and biodynamically-farmed. It’s also the one wine that shows a little bit of oak in the nose, but that note dissipated quite quickly in the glass. It has perfect ripeness, with a perfumed mixture of violets, red and black fruit, plums and a hint of olives and a spicy touch, showing a pleasant herbal twist, possibly from the Merlot after some time in the glass. Hans described it a s a “rebel” within the portfolio, a wine with character, more powerful than A Lisa (one has a feminine name, the other one masculine…), changing with the year, a little capricious. It was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in used barrels, with some 15% of the volume kept in egg-shaped Nomblot cement vats, which Hans thinks are different from the others, mainly the quality of the components, and are less porous. Hands thinks this is subdued, the first year he has been able to drive the wine in the direction he wanted rather than the wine taking the lead and going where it(he?) pleased. It has very good balance and elegance within its powerful personality, combining strength with finesse. Again, this could be the best J Alberto ever produced. 12,000 bottles were filled in January 2016.”
