Mont-Redon Lirac Rouge 2016
6 PACK BUY “Baby” Chateauneuf at a bargain price – best vintage in 50 years.
Château Mont-Redon will be familiar to those who know and love Châteauneuf-du-Pape being well recognized as the owners of some of the most highly regarded vineyard sites in the appellation. The superb quality of its 100 hectares of vineyards has been recognized throughout history and date back to the 14th Century. Prior to the change of the appellation controlee system it was one of the few “Grand cru’s” in the region (together with Chateau Rayas), and producing some of the most elegant of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
This wine comes from their vineyards in Lirac, situated on the opposite bank of the Rhone River to Chateauneuf-du-Pape between the towns of Orange and Avignon. They have been crafting wines here since 1997 in the shadow of its famous appellation neighbour on similar soils of sand and pebbles. Summers are dry and hot with the warm mistral winds keeping away any humidity.
They have all the classic floral notes and aromatics you’d expect from a great Chateauneuf-du-Pape at half the price – all handpicked and selected fruit which ensures absolute quality. This is the holy grail of quality and value .. dark, dense, fine, long, balanced.. everything you’d expect from Chateauneuf-du-Pape at a fraction of the price .. It reminds me of ‘baby chateauneuf du pape’ – everything you’d expect from a fine Chateauneuf-du-Pape but at a bargain price!
2016 was an outstanding vintage in the Southern Rhone … wines that equalled or exceeded the concentration of the 2015s but whose acidity and freshness elevated the wines to another level of vibrancy. Some are calling it the best vintage in 50 years!
Joe Czerwinski from The Wine Advocate “The 2016 vintage in the Southern Rhône seems comparable to 1982 in Bordeaux for the profound impact it’s likely to have on the market. These are incredible wines produced in reasonable quantities that are still largely undervalued. Smart consumers will snap up wines from their favorite producers as soon as they can, as the 2017’s will be even more expensive and harder to find when they’re released.’
A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Cinsault and 10% Syrah from Roquemaure in Lirac. 100% destemmed and
fermented for 2-3 weeks in stainless steel tank. Matured 2/3 in stainless steel tank and 1/3 in barriques for 12-15
months, before blending and a further 3 months maturation in tank.
4 stars, John Livingstone-Learmonth, drinkrhone.com, October 2018. ‘Dark red robe, a purple top. There are savoury, beef stock, black olives airs in a ripe, already pretty open nose; grilling accompanies its cassis fruits, some coulis in their depth, ripeness there. There’s a hint of oak. The palate runs with expressive black fruits, blueberry, licorice to the fore, with some grain tannin on the aftertaste. This is tasty, with its black fruits pretty clear cut, coming out with dance. This is modern, on the go, lively Lirac with good brio. The attack and its bustling, busy fruit carries well into the finish, where the oak gives some toffee. Best 2030-2032.’ Do not miss this quality and value bargain!
