Longhop Shiraz 2019
SPECIAL BUY 6 or more! “the most impressive $20 SA shiraz you’ll buy this year…” Oz Wine Review. “This is lush stuff. True neck oil.” The Wine Front.
Longhop is a winemaking venture between 2 high school friends, Tim Freeland and Dominic Torzi (of leading Eden Valley winery, Torzi Matthews) and these guys continue to shake things up as far as the quality to price wine ratio goes…this wine (sourced from 3 Adelaide Plains vineyards) is extraordinary for the price.
The former Gawler high school mates seized upon an idea in 2002 of salvaging some of the last remaining old vine vineyards in the Adelaide Plains and making icon wines from that region. Vineyards were secured, old vines a priority. Their small band of growers have since embraced the ideal of delivering premium grapes in order to showcase the power and rich fruit flavours the Adelaide Plains and adjoining Mt Lofty Ranges has to offer. The wines are made with minimal intervention. Open fermented and basket pressed. No fining or filtration is used prior to bottling.
From vines aged 16 – 50+ years. Whole berry ferment in five ton open top fermenters with soft pump overs and minimal hand plunging. On skins for six days, then basket pressed into young seasoned oak with ferment finishing off in barrel. Matured in French and American oak. Two rackings prior to blending and unfiltered bottling. No fining agents used, Vegan friendly
Full bodied style, plump mouth filling flavour with a rich palate of chocolate, dark plum, leather, mulberry and spice, well integrated cedary oak and firm deep tannin structure. Very drinkable now, cellar to 7 years. Alc/Vol: 14.5%
Fruit hails from Adelaide Plains (50 plus year old vines predominantly from One Tree Hill famous for Penfolds St Henri and Adelaide Hills, Mount Lofty Ranges)
From the winemaker about this release: “Rolling into the 15th consecutive vintage release of our most favourite shiraz. We are happy to say the tradition continues. The tradition of delivering a rich full bodied South Australian Shiraz that packs a punch but is easy on the wallet. Dark fruited goodness, easing into leathery and cedary notes, big on flavour, mouth-feel and length.”
This is an extraordinary bargain for the depth of fruit and length of flavour .. pedigree of old vine fruit on display here. Do not miss this !!
92 points, Andrew Graham, Oz Wine Review “It’s only May, but I’m calling it – this Longhop Shiraz 2019 is the most impressive $20 South Australian Shiraz you’ll buy this year. Lofty words, but it’s not just a feeling. There is one very good reason why this is so good for so few dollars – and well worth a deep dive. It’s all about the fruit source … It’s such a substantial red. Thick and grainy, with a real black fruit profile, the palate is so deep and dark and long. It gets a bit heavy on the finish, but that just adds to the intensity. $20? There are $50 reds with less intensity than this. It’s a bit rough and tumble on the finish, but that just adds to the charm. Bargain. I was almost at 93 on the score too. Best drinking: now to ten years plus.” 11/5/2021
90 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “How bloody good is Dom Torzi? National treasure. Also, best black olives in the business. And the tapenade is off the charts. This is lush stuff. True neck oil. Easy drinking, dark fruited, ripe, sweet, spicy, soft and pillowy. A kind of rustic charm and do damn honest. Booze soaked berries and dark chocolate blitzed for your pleasure. Straight up delicious. It’s big and brassy and clumsy and cuddly. It’s so darn yum!”
Gary Walsh from The Wine Front also commented in Mike’s review “Bold. So bold. Black fruit, leather, dark chocolate. cedar and dried flowers. Full-bodied, loads of dark chocolate, boiled fruitcake and blackberry, some grainy tannin, a little warmth, and an inky finish of good length, a bit of the old dragon’s breath flaying off some of its charm. Not exactly subtle, but honest and hearty.”
Tasting this new release on day 2 & 3 reveals the pedigree of this fine wine as more layers and dimensions are revealed. Do not miss out on this extraordinary bargain.
