We love this rich south Australian cabernet for the staggering quality and price!
Longhop is a winemaking venture between high school friends, Tim Freeland and Dominic Torzi (of leading Eden Valley winery, Torzi Matthews) and these guys have taken the notion of overdelivering (wine quality for price) to another galaxy ! Bravo here for this second release!
Fruit is sourced from 50 year old vines in Hillier in the Mt Lofty Ranges (grown in sandy loams and alluvium soils giving that typical old vine punch) and Uleybury which reaches altitudes of 300 metres and where vines cling to thin topsoils on limestone and quartrz adding firmness and grip. Intense, stunning, well made, well flavoured, over-delivering. Combining fruit sourced from a 50 year old Adelaide Plains vineyard, and 15 year old vineyard at 300 metres altitude at Ulybury, the combination is unique. Open fermented, hand plunged, basket pressed, 12 months in seasoned French oak. From the winemaker “..Delicate blueberries and violets move onto deeper blackberries and mulberries on the palate. The length of the wine continues to build with fine acid and tannin rounding out the clean elongated finish. Brilliant.” We love this rich south Australian cabernet for the staggering quality and price !?
Philip White, Indaily & Drinkster Dec 2015 “… its pretty violets and blueberries;the soft 6B carbon and wood of the builder’s pencil; the cooking chocolate; the blackberries and mulberries glowering like conserve down below: this looks like a very rich bastard’s wine… like maybe Bin 707 … Unctuous then sharp then looooonnngg. Acid at the end. This is brilliant, clean, intelligently-made upland Cabernet: fine humourous and lively, at a really silly little price. Start your stomachs, face the ink, BANG!”
