★★★★★ – Huon Hooke, The Real Review
Hahndorf Hill’s six-hectare vineyard is located at the edge of historic Hahndorf village and on the slopes of a gentle hill which, over a century ago, contained a slate quarry. It is very apparent when walking along the slopes of the vineyard blocks at Hahndorf Hill that slate forms a significant part of the mineral component of the soils.
The vineyard topsoils consist of a sandy-loam and red-clay blend, richly embellished with blue-red slate, quartz and ironstone intrusions. The subsoils comprise deep red clay. This abundance of diverse mineral components in the soil translates into a distinct mineral element in all their wines, which is especially beneficial for their Austrian varieties – such as Gruner Veltliner – at which they excel and have pioneered over the past 25 years.
The Adelaide Hills’ slow ripening, cool-climate environment allows for all their grapes to benefit from an extended ripening season with beautifully warm days and cold nights. This diurnal variation is a significant quality defining factor according to producers of these varieties in their native Austria. Hahndorf Hill believe in environmentally sustainable methods to bring out the finesse and vitality in their wines.
Fine rose comprising a blend of German variety, Trollinger, Pinot Noir and other varietals. Early picked to retain fine acidity.
From the winemaker .. “Our beautiful, dry Rosé is regularly rated as one of the top Rosés in Australia, with the 2019 vintage once again included on James Halliday’s list of the Best of the Best Rosés in Australia in his 2021 Australian Wine Companion. Now try our refreshing, dry 2020 Rosé! It has a beautiful watermelon juice colour and a succulent nose of red cherries, rich baked apple and gentle spice, that gets you salivating even before you sip. Intense and lively on the palate with a rush of crushed red berries and red apple, it has a gentle textural rub with a super-racy, long juicy finish. Perfectly matched with all seafood and South East Asian cuisine – and is fearless when matched with any chilli-based cuisine. This is a rosé that will age well for between 5 – 7 years.”
Accolades and Gold medals galore already for the 2020 – see above! Reviews for the 2019 below:
95 points and Best of the Best, James Halliday “37% pinot noir, 28% merlot, 27% trollinger and 8% tannat (a first-time inclusion), each hand-picked specifically for this wine, each crushed for free-run juice to prevent colour pickup. Delicately framed and poised, it is a special rose given as much care as any dry red or white wine. Gold medal Melbourne International Wine Competition ’19.”
93 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Cracking rose. Perfumed and dry, textural and generous – at once. It just makes you want to keep diving in for more. Orange and redcurrant, preserved lemon and something pulpy. Love it. So refreshing. So tasty. Pale, pale crimson in colour.”
