Description
It was 1983 when Ian and June Marks found their vineyard site after a long search for the perfect pocket of land throughout almost every wine region in Victoria. With views of Mt Donna Buang, a backdrop of the Warburton ranges, red soil and a coveted north-easterly aspect, it is the perfect spot for cool climate winemaking. Gembrook Hill led the way as part of the ‘second wave’ of Yarra Valley vignerons, and today is one of the oldest vineyards in the Upper Yarra sub-region.
Gembrook’s wines are regarded as some of the most outstanding examples of their variety in Australia and are crafted with an old-world winemaking mindset. Most vine age now over twenty years. Gembrook Hill was one of the pacesetters in the Yarra Valley with its restrained yet complex style of chardonnay. The sauvignon blanc possesses characteristics found in Sancerre.. this is up there with the finest examples in the land.. gorgeous wine it’s textural, pure and thirst quenching. And the pinot noir has the elegance of old world Burgundy. The most recent addition to the range, the vintage Blanc de Blancs, has been acclaimed as one of the finest of its type, French or otherwise.
Notes from the winemaker about this vintage: “The 2019 Sauvignon Blanc comes from grapes picked from our estate grown 35 year old vines. The consistently warm summer produced a wine with slightly higher alcohol than usual, resulting in a sauvignon blanc with more body, giving it a rich mouth feel, while maintaining its herbaceous flavours.”
95 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday’s Wine Companion “50% stainless-steel fermentation, 50% left on the lees for 5 months in used French oak. One of my go-to sauvignon blancs because it’s so delicious and refreshing, yet complex and deep. It incorporates texture, with a vibrancy and brightness of fruit. Expect citrus, white pepper, chalky acidity and decent length.”
94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “All I can really say is that this is another excellent release. Intensity, texture and length are all spot on. It smells and tastes varietal but not overtly so, or not in the grass/lemongrass/thistle sense. You’d still pick it as SB straight up though, which is to its credit. There’s both a flintiness and a creaminess here but likewise, not in an aggressive way. Indeed nothing is overt here and yet it has excellent intensity. We don’t really need to go into fruit descriptors but those who like a bit of crushed fennel character in their white wine, included here is a bonza example of just that.”
