Description
Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced predominantly from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and like their labels, very cool!
Sourced from the Merricks Grove vineyard, the fruit for this wine was hand-sorted twice and fermented in two ways: one fermenter of whole berries and another of 100% whole bunches. These two portions were then blended together. Both fermentations were natural with a reasonably long maceration and yet gentle extraction–light pump-overs and a few gentle plunges. The wine matured in 300-litre hogsheads (roughly 20% new, François Frères) and spent eleven months on lees before bottling, unfiltered. It’s a supple and savoury expression of the shire, dangerously drinkable from start to finish. Expect a juicy personality packed with spiced cherry, grenadine, subtle nettle and classy wood spice leading to a lingering, perfumed finish and a lick of fine tannin.
Newly released … reviews for 2020 vintage … 95 points, James Halliday 2021 Australian Wine Companion “A light ruby hue segues to an inviting nose, boasting sap and a density far from the candied red fruited regional norm. Sapid cherry scents, damson plum, Asian five-spice, wood smoke and sandalwood. Nebbioloesque. The compact tannins curl across the mouth, long-chained, pliant and just firm enough. Each component of their makeup integrating beautifully to draw the flavours long while evincing an authority and welcome savouriness, without any obvious greenness. Very fine.”
93+ points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Twiggy, floral, spicy, light and red fruited. The tannin here is particularly good, with a firmness and dusty grip that’s so pleasing to feel. It has light, energy, and a heap of charm and interest, a slight cherry lolly flavour, and a solid finish, that perhaps holds it back from taking home an even higher score. I like its style.”
