Freycinet Vineyard Riesling 2020
SPECIAL BUY 6 or more. Serious Tassie Riesling built to last!
Geoff and Susan Bull were early viticultural pioneers on the East Coast of Tasmania, establishing Freycinet Vineyard in 1979. It is situated adjacent to the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula, (latitude 42 degrees), which is named in honour of the French explorer Louis de Freycinet, who chartered the region in 1802. The 15 hectare vineyard is proudly family owned and the wines are 100% grown, produced and bottled on our estate. The site is a warm sheltered one within the truly cool Tasmanian climate. The vineyards are meticulously hand tended to grow moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit. The rustic winery houses ‘state of the art’ equipment to ensure wine quality is not lost. The wines are produced with great care, dedication and passion – they are a delicious liquid expression of our unique place on earth, the varieties and the season.
“Tasmania is an extraordinary place for Riesling with its potential to produce some of the nation’s finest.
Freycinet Rieslings have a fine pedigree stretching back 23 years to 1998 when the first 100% varietal riesling was produced, gaining high praise and considerable recognition along the way. We are particularly passionate and excited about riesling at Freycinet. Our philosophy is to showcase the purity of riesling aroma and flavour in the wine. This begins with growing moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit in the vineyard. Vines are all hand pruned and hand harvested. In the winery a very careful, protective approach is utilised to ensure the delicate yet intense aromas and flavours are not lost. Key to this is a very slow fermentation at cool temperatures.
Season 2020 was characterised by very dry conditions throughout, leading to slightly reduced vine canopy growth and lower yields. Disease pressure was low and fruit quality excellent.
Half the pleasure of riesling for us is the delicate floral perfume reminiscent of flowers and which the 2020 Freycinet Riesling reveals in spades. The elegant palate is fresh and lively featuring bright, piercing riesling flavours of lemons and limes, carried by utterly mouth-watering, crisp acidity to a long satisfying finish. The elegance and refreshment qualities of the wine make it a perfect accompaniment to all lighter flavoured fine foods particularly seafood, or it can be simply enjoyed on its own. Carefully cellared this wine will provide drinking pleasure over a 20 year period, developing the attractive complex age characters reminiscent of honey and toast.”
A pale Riesling, with an excellent marriage of delicacy and power. Blossom, lemon and lime aromas are still very much in the primary varietal spectrum, while a whisper of sulfide gives a smoky, minerally dimension. It’s bone-dry in the mouth, with well-concentrated, rich flavour and a lasting, zesty, powdery dry finish. A serious Riesling built to last.
95 points, Halliday’s Wine Companion 2022 “Tasmania showcases Riesling’s wonderfully exotic side and its high-tensile endurance, but rarely are these united as effortlessly as this. Low yields made for impressive concentration of star fruit, wild lemon and golden kiwifruit. Honed by gloriously crystalline acidity, it glides with consummate control, precision and endurance. One of the greats, it will live forever.”

A serious Riesling built to last.”
93 points, The Wine Front “Awash with full, ripe and rich apricots, fresh lemons, lemongrass, stony minerality, fresh blossoms and racy acidity for days. This is cracking as a young wine but gosh, it’s got everything that will make it a little belter for maturing for years to come.”
