Flametree Embers Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Plush and ripe Margaret River cabernet “..the most serious Embers Cabernet Sauvignon we’ve ever produced.”
Flametree Wines has had a meteoric to become one of the star wineries of the Margaret River wine region. Under the skilled winemaking of Cliff Royle (ex-Voyager Estate) the quality of wines are impressive across the board.
James Halliday … “Flametree, owned by the Towner family (John, Liz, Rob and Annie), has had extraordinary success since its first vintage in 2007. The usual practice of planting a vineyard and then finding someone to make the wine was turned on its head: a state-of-the-art winery was built, and grape purchase agreements signed with growers in the region. Show success was topped by the winning of the Jimmy Watson Trophy with its 2007 Cabernet Merlot. If all this were not enough, Flametree secured the services of winemaker Cliff Royle.”
From the winemaker: “Margaret River is arguably Australia’s premier Cabernet Sauvignon grape growing region and our Embers Cabernet Sauvignon has been crafted in a manner that captures the best of the variety and its distinctive regional characters. 2018 was a super vintage in Margaret River. The season began with even budburst after average winter rainfall, this was followed by a mild spring that ensured even flowering and fruit set. A moderate start to summer, with no heat extremes set up the harvest well with all varieties displaying excellent flavour intensity and bright acidity. There was an abundance of Marri blossom which meant bird pressure was practically non-existent whilst all grapes were harvested. In summary the 2018 reds will be remembered as some of the best ever made in our relatively
short 50 year history.“
Soft extraction techniques and cooler ferment temperatures have resulted in a generously – fruited, fleshy wine with lovely lifted Cabernet Sauvignon aromatics. All batches were carefully destemmed, maintaining a high portion of whole berries. Each batch was then fermented separately before being transferred into seasoned French oak to undergo maturation for 12 months. After maturation in barrel the wine was blended, lightly filtered and then bottled.
From the winemaker: “This is the most serious Embers Cabernet Sauvignon we’ve ever produced and that’s a direct reflection of the quality of the 2018 vintage. The 2018 Embers Cabernet Sauvignon has loads of violets, ripe black fruits with bitter chocolate and cedar notes. This year’s wine is juicier and more concentrated than previous vintages. Flavours of Satsuma plum, blackberry cassis and dark chocolate underpin this super vintage. Unashamedly full of flavour with soft ripe fruits and a fine tannin structure. Perfect for early consumption or short term cellaring.” 14.2% alc.
“Fermented in separate lots, designed for soft extraction and for subsequent 12 months maturation in French oak, the best barrels selected for this wine. That is jaw-dropping. It’s a crowd pleaser big time. James Halliday’s 2021 Australian Wine Companion.
“This is a very fresh, vibrant and bright cabernet that offers a mix of redcurrant and cassis aromas and flavors with quite fresh, lithe style on the palate.” James Suckling.com, April 2020
