“Just when I thought I was familiar with the wines of Felsina, the estate comes through with one of the very best sets of new releases I have ever tasted. From top to bottom, these are marvelous wines that deserve serious attention.” Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate
Fattoria di Felsina in the hills northeast of Siena is on the southern tip of the Chianti Classico region. Founded in 1966 by Domenico Poggiali, Fèlsina was the Etruscan name for this viticultural terroir nearly 3000 years ago. The estate at the southern border of Castelnuovo Berardenga remains one of Tuscany’s finest terrains. Today, Beppe Poggiali, Giuseppe Mazzocolin and superstar winemaker Franco Bernabei form an awesome team that has overseen 25 years of extensive research and clonal selection of sangiovese to achieve an incredible combination of complexity, structure, power and finesse. They are traditional producers, (organic practices in their vineyards) who solely grow sangiovese and always avoided the temptation to grow cabernet and merlot make “new age” wines from their Chianti vineyards. They have championed the sangiovese grape (native to Toscana) and are renowned for elegant and yet intensely flavoured chiantis (deep and black fruited, smoky tones from the soils and deft touch of new oak). Fèlsina has been awarded Tre Bicchieri every year since the first publication of Gambero Rosso’s Vini d’Italia in 1988, and in 2009 they were named Winery of the Year. Rancia, the estate’s single vineyard Riserva, is simply superb; ripe and racy fruit balancing spice, game, and mineral notes with layered, lingering flavours. Decanter magazine included Rancia recently in the 50 Great Italian wines of all time. Fontalloro is 100% Sangiovese from 3 vineyards, 1 located just inside and the other 2 just outside the Chianti Classico border and is renowned for its structure, concentration, intensity and depth. The Riserva wines here are powerful and fleshy thanks to older vineyards in excess of 50 years and excellent exposure of the vineyards, where the sangiovese grapes always achieve full ripeness.
Highly sought after and imported into Australia in limited quantities we expect our allocation of this 100% Sangiovese Chianti Classico to sell out quickly!
92 points James Suckling “ A super refined wine with sliced berry plus hints of cedar and vanilla. Full-bodied, bright and crisp; lovely finish. ” (10/2015)
92 points Wine Spectator, *Rated Number 40 out of Top 100 of 2016, Smart Buy* “This is rich and sumptuous, boasting pure flavors of cherry and raspberry, matched to a juicy texture. There are plenty of tannins neatly folded into the overall structure, with hints of mineral and tea on the long, expansive finish. Best from 2017 through 2024. (BS) (6/2016)”
91+ Points, Monica Larner, eRobertParker.com “Fèlsina’s 2013 Chianti Classico Berardenga shows a great level of richness and general intensity. The wine reveals a very full and luscious set of aromas with cherry and blackberry in pole position. Lighter tones of spice and tobacco fill in at the back and give the wine a greater sense of aromatic lift. The mouthfeel is also characterized by velvety richness. Look out for this delicious vintage.” (October 2015)
91 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media “… one of the richest, darkest versions of this wine I can remember tasting. Black cherries, game, smoke, tar, leather and soy are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. The 2013 is wild, savory and surprisingly dense. It also has the potential to overachieve over the near and medium term. All the house signatures are very much alive here.” July 2015.
17/20 points, Walster Speller, JancisRobinson.com “Mid crimson. Full concentration on the nose, yet mediumd-bodied, fragrant fruit on the palate with wonderful, chewy tannins. Elegant much more than powerful and wants food.” March 2015
