“The sheer quality of the wines he makes is equalled only by his consistency” James Halliday.
When I met winemaker Bruce Dukes from Domaine Naturaliste I was bowled over by how striking every wine was that I tasted in his lineup … A rare occurrence when you’re tasting wines every day.
The success did not happen by accident. He has an intimate knowledge of all the terroirs of Margaret River after spending 25 years honing his craft with leading Margaret River producers such as Pierro wines. He is a trained agronomist and has a Masters in viticulture and Oenology from U.C. Davis … he also worked for 4 years at Neibaum Coppola in Napa, USA. Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture, overall balance, restraint with low to moderate alcohol in all his beautiful wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated. Minuscule production of top shelf wines across the board.
“Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon cultivars are well adapted to our gravelly soils and maritime climate. Sauvignon contributing fragrance and Semillon texture and capacity for aging. They are from the cooler southern end of Margaret River, which is renowned for its fragrant white wines. Bold aromas of red currant, passion fruit and orange blossom laced with exotic notes of lychee and clove. A creamy mouth filling palate delights the senses with an unexpected richness and depth of flavour. ” Winemaker. Bruce Dukes.
Single vineyard wine comprising 2 parts Sav Blanc to 1 part Semillon. Sauvage (which refers to the part wild ferment) Lemon and lime leaps out of glass with textural hints of red currant. passionfruit and orange blossom laced with exotic notes of lychee and clove. A creamy mouth filling palate delights the senses with an unexpected richness and depth of flavour. Slightly warmer vintage has produced a wine with lovely fruit forward characters .. drinking superbly now but with up to 8 years cellaring potential. 13% alc.
96 points James Halliday, 2019 Australian Wine Companion “A 75/25% blend matured on lees for 10 months in French puncheons (33% new). A hauntingly complex bouquet has passionfruit, lemongrass and French oak aromas, the palate with unusual depth and classic length. Trophy Sydney International Wine Competition ’16 and Margaret River Wine Show ’16, both thoroughly deserved.”
94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Glorious wine. Highly aromatic, highly textural, intensely flavoured and showing super length. It has enough discipline to keep the spine straight but from there it lets its hair down, allowing all manner of smoky, grassy, fruity flavours to frolic about. It’s kaleidoscopic, no less.”
