“Astrolabe has been my go-to sauvignon maker for many years”... BOB CAMPBELL, MW, The Real Review
Astrolabe Wines is a premium wine producer from Marlborough, New Zealand known for its benchmark style of Sauvignon Blanc.
First generation winemaker Simon Waghorn has been honing his craft over thirty six years and has established a benchmark style of sauvignon blanc that reflects an unparalleled diversity of vineyard sources. Careful site selection, expert picking decisions, delicate fruit handling and astute blending are the hallmarks of his Marlborough wines. Simon chose the name Astrolabe because of historic ties with Marlborough and connotations of exploration and discovery. Together with his wife, Jane, they founded Astrolabe in Marlborough in 1996. Astrolabe is family owned and operated. All grapes are sourced from ten families who live on their land and farm sustainably. Each site was chosen for the distinctive flavour it produces. We work with dedicated growers who understand the rhythms of the land and know how to grow grapes that express the terroir. Simon is fascinated by the distinctive qualities of the Wairau Valley, Awatere Valley and Kekerengu Coast sub-regions.
The dry Awatere Valley has a more extreme climate than most of Marlborough, with strong winds, variable soils, greater temperature fluctuations and a later ripening season. Vines are planted from sea level to quite high altitude, and the scarceness of irrigation water is often limiting to vine growth. As a result the grape berry size is reduced and flavours can be more intense.
Winemaker notes: “I blend to suit what I think is Astrolabe’s style, which reflects what I’ve learnt as a winemaker and drinker over the years. My style is dry, expressive and elegantly balanced. For me it is about getting a lovely sense of fully developed green spectrum flavours from all these different sites and putting them in a glass in a way that is well-styled and elegant. My Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc always presents with ripe green flavours like passionfruit, blackcurrant leaf and gooseberry. In the palate, it is full and round and finishes dry and lingering.
This is a drier style of sauvignon blanc, acidity kept nicely in balance wirh the alcohol and the very little residual sugar that is there, so it’s all about how all these things come together to make a pleasurable whole. I craft my wines so that nothing stands out as one singular spike, instead revealing a lovely layering of flavours and aromas that people can keep finding as they spend time savouring the glass.” Simon Waghorn — Winemaker
Pale straw in colour with green highlights. Aromas of blackcurrant leaf, lime zest, lemongrass and elderflower. Medium-bodied with white currants and preserved lemon, fresh herbs and a dry, savoury and weighty finish. Best enjoyed when young and fresh, but has the potential to age gracefully for many years.
94 points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review “Ripe, deliciously fruity sauvignon blanc with melon, guava and citrus-lime, together with smattering of fresh herbs. A creamy-textured wine with good weight and a lingering finish. Textbook Marlborough sauvignon.”
4 ½ STARS, Michael Cooper “New Zealand Wines: Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide 2020″ “The 2019 vintage is a regional blend, grown principally in the Awatere Valley (65 per cent). Weighty, it has fresh, ripely herbaceous flavours, showing excellent delicacy and depth, and a long, crisp, dry finish.”
94 points “EXCELLENT” Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier “Plush, fleshy, fruity and varietal with aromas of tropical fruits and fresh herbs, an abundance of wet stone mineral scents and white blossom. On the palate – equally fleshy and fruity, crisp, refreshing and just dry on the finish. Flavours of lemon and passionfruit, apple and fresh herb. High acidity – almost sweet to the taste, plenty of mineral and floral layers. Just dry on the finish. A lovely example, balanced and well made. Best drinking from today and through 2023.” JUN 20
