Larmandier Bernier Latitude Brut Tradition NV
SPECIAL 6 Pack Buy Biodynamic grower Champagne.
This grower should need little introduction to Australian wine buyers. Few growers have laid bare their terroir quite so transparently as this biodynamic pioneer, challenging tasters to assess Champagne as they would any other great wine. Larmandier’s tireless work in the vineyard, his minimalist approach in the winery, his deep-thinking and non-conformist views – not to mention his super mineral terroir – results in a group of intensely saline, mineral wines.
100% Chardonnay, the current release embodies everything you could hope for in a Larmandier Champagne; they are precise, captivating, intense and immaculately sculpted vins de terroir.
“The Larmandier-Bernier Champagnes are some of the purest and most utterly engaging wines being made in the region today. I can’t recommend them highly enough.” -Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate
“Larmandier-Bernier exemplifies the level of purity and mineral focus that can be drawn out of primarily premier cru terroir with sufficient care and attention. These exceedingly fine wines rightfully rank high amongst the finest of Champagne’s grower producer” –Tyson Stelzer, The Champagne Guide
Latitude is a 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay, predominantly grown, as it always has been, in vineyards on the southern side of Vertus. These are vineyards on roughly the same “Latitude”, and the name also hints at the breadth of texture that the wines from these clay rich soils tend to offer up, even when only Chardonnay is used. In the cuverie Larmandier uses a combination of neutral barrel, foudre (almost all the wood now comes from Stockinger in Austria) and less and less steel tank. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place without inoculation, and there’s no fining or filtration. Bottle maturation takes place quietly over a period of more than 2 years, and each bottle is disgorged manually 6 months before being released and dosed with a very low 3-4 grams per litre (i.e., it is an extra brut). Immaculately crafted as ever, the most recent set of releases offer cut-diamond grace and precision, citrusy, chalky energy and a succulent, textured core. Stunning Blanc de Blancs.
“The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Latitude 1er Cru is powerful, full-bodied and structured, with a real sense of depth. Smoke, lemon peel, crushed rocks, graphite, menthol, dried pear and chamomile nuances infuse this virile Champagne. Readers looking for a Champagne to drink at the dinner table will adore the Latitude. This is an especially fine edition. Don’t miss it. The current release is based on the 2014 vintage, with 40% reserve wines. As always, the Latitude emerges from the southern part of Vertus, an area that has historically been planted with Pinot Noir, which was considered better suited than Chardonnay because of the clay-rich soils. Dosage is 4 grams per liter.” 94 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, December 2017
“It encapsulates the gorgeous freshness of young Vertus chardonnay in its grapefruit, freshly picked apple and lemon blossom aromas, while boring deep into its chalk mineral structure, building great textural presence, amplified by the spicy, nutty complexity of barrel fermentation.” 94 points, Tyson Stelzer, The Champagne Guide 2014-2015
