Description
Young Aurélien Laherte farms all of his family’s vines biodynamically or organically. Since joining the family’s estate back in 2002 and taking over full control of the vineyards and the cellars from 2007 he has taken things to another level to become a benchmark grower with wines that brim with character and distinction. They have an astonishing 75 parcels of vines to make up 10 hectares mostly scattered across the hills south of Épernay in Chavot and Coteaux Sud and tiny holdings in the Cote de Blancs and the Marne Valley . Through microscopic attention to detail, hand harvesting and exemplary wood based élevage, Laherte has put this part of Champagne well and truly back on the grower map. All of his wines are naturally fermented with wild yeast with no additions and are hand disgorged with very low dosage.
2015 base with 50% reserve wines from the two previous vintages, disgorged in January 2018. This striking, racy, crunchy Champagne is 100% Chardonnay from the family’s most mineral soils in Chavot, Vaudancourt, Voipreux and Épernay – all sites that are biodynamically farmed. These vineyards are very rich in chalk and limestone but there is also marl (chalky clay), flint and schist. This ‘chalkiness’ explains the wine’s intensely pungent minerality (energy, freshness) and zingy, citric lines while the clay content gives fruit weight and texture. It has been aged for just over two years in bottle following a first fermentation in large cask and tanks. Like all Laherte’s Champagne, this was disgorged ‘à la volée’, which means by hand. Wow this really is scintillating blanc de blancs champagne definitely not to be missed
“A Champagne of extraordinary finesse, the NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs is positively stunning. Smoke, slate, crushed rocks, lemon peel and white flowers are beautifully sculpted. Crystalline and taut, yet with remarkable resonance, the Blanc de Blancs is totally alluring from the very first taste. The current release is 50% 2015 and 50% a blend of 2014 and 2013 from vineyards in both the southern sector of Epernay and the Côte des Blancs.” 95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
