Description
Stephen George wears 3 winemakers’ hats, one for his Ashton Hills wines coming from his estate vineyard high in the Adelaide Hills, one for Galah Wines and the other for the iconic Wendouree in Clare. He refers to his dry grown Piccadilly Valley vineyard planted back in 1982 as the “Burgundy of the Adelaide Hills”. Ashton Hills has received many awards including the coveted 5 Red star rating from James Halliday.
Serious pedigree here – (all fruit comes from the iconic Wendouree vineyard in Clare – 99 year old vineyard). Base wines have 3 years in barrel before tirage. We are thrilled with the quality of this 2009 release.
96 points Tyson Stelzer, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Nov 2016 ...“Ashton Hills Sparkling Shiraz has ascended to a lofty position among the finest of its style in the country. 2009 meets the expectation but for completely unexpected reasons. This vintage has an altogether different mood to the brooding complexity of its predecessors. A red cherry and strawberry elegance takes the lead here with delicate rosehip overtones, underscored by the black olive and licorice-strap personality that defines its dimension. Its craftsmanship shows impeccable Stephen George precision: seamless and silky, structured with the ultra-fine, mineral tannins of ancient Wendouree vines, culminating in an exceptionally long finish. Drink: 2016-2024.”
17/20, JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming MW – Jan 2017 “Chocolate, plum, incredibly fragrant violet character; sweet and highly aromatic – the quality of the fruit shines through the lovely fizz, and the dosage balances beautifully. Such a fun wine – yet there is serious complexity here too.”
97 points, Huon Hooke, HuonHooke.com: “Deep-ish red-purple, youthful and fresh, the wine exuding typical Clare Valley spice/driedherb, aniseed and balsamic/mint aromas. It’s been given adequate time to mature, for which there is no substitute if this type of wine is to be this delicious. It’s not a blockbuster: medium-bodied and elegantly structured, beautifully balanced, the tannins having softened and the dosage used thoughtfully. A benchmark: there are few better examples of the style.”
