Incredible Grand Cru Rose .. top notch quality here.
“André Clouet is the finest grower in two of Champagne’s most powerful pinot noir villages, and wields the variety to full advantage in a rosé that epitomises elegance and focus in the midst of generous intensity.” Tyson Stelzer, Rose Revolution, 2013.
“Pierre and Francoise Santz-Clouet, and now their dashing winemaking son Jean-Francois, are the best sort of Champagne growers. Their 8ha vineyards lie on the best middle slopes of Bouzy and Ambonnay, all grand cru sites in a domaine that is just the right size for perfectionist winemaking from great grapes, while providing a comfortable living for a family that still lives in the 17th century village house built by their ancestor, a printer to Louis XV’s royal court at Versailles.“ The Finest Wines of Champagne by Michael Edwards
“100% Grand Cru Bouzy and Ambonnay pinot noir; 2012 base vintage Jean-Francois ‘Clouet No 3’ was inspired by Coco Chanel, the number introduced for the first time this year to denote the style, recognising that the colour is different each year, and with the number 3 representing a light, elegant aperitif style. Elegance and freshness are his goals for rose, avoiding what he describes as the ‘full, rustic and heavy” styles of the past.
Clouet’s rose epitomises elegance and focus, while flamboyantly celebrating the generous red cherry, strawberry, watermelon and pink pepper fruit of Bouzy. It encapsulates that wonderful talent of pinot noir to build and rise on the finish, all the while retaining graceful precision as delicate as rose petal perfume. Structure is fine and elegant, driven both by chalk minerality of the village and a very finely executed tannin presence. It finishes with great length and poise of exquisite red cherry fruit. A pristine and enticingly priced rose. Older disgorgements have taken on savoury suggestions of tamarillo, while upholding their primary integrity.” Tyson Stelzer.
95 points, Tyson Stelzer, The Champagne Guide 2014-2015 “I say 10% of the blend is from my blood!’ declares Jean-Francois Clouet, who has changed the style of his family’s rose to a fresher and more direct mood, not so soft, aiming for the lively impression of malic acidity, even though it goes through full malolactic fermentation. The result is a rose that epitomises elegance and focus, in the midst of the generous red fruits that characterise Bouzy and Ambonnay. The cuvee encapsulates that wonderful talent of pinot noir to build and rise on the finish, opening to wonderful characters of perfumed rosehip, pink pepper and pomegranate. An undercurrent of fine, chalk mineral texture, accurate line and preserving length define a pristine and enticingly priced rose.”
