Exceptional vintage. One of Piedmont’s finest producers

“I can’t think of too many estates in Piedmont that have raised the bar higher than Vietti has over the last decade or so. Virtually every wine that emerges from these cellars is outstanding, and many are profound … an unprecedented level of consistency and quality across their entire range.” ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous Media
For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small village in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, from their vineyards located across the five communes designated for the cultivation and production of Barolo. Over recent years Luca Currado-Vietti had taken over the winemaking direction from his late father Alfredo. The overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations.
“Perbacco” translates from italian as “for Bacchus” – this is Vietti’s fine offering to the Wine God.
The Perbacco is made from 100% Nebbiolo parcels all planted in the Barolo region from vines (average 35 years old) from Barolo sites : Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Rocchettevino, Pernanno, Ravera di Monforte and Scarrone. Fruit selection here was more open and approachable than that selected for Barolo followed by 2 years maturation in Slavonian oak botti cask. Luca gives this extraordinary Perbacco all the love and attention in the vineyard with the same yields, vinification and aging period as for their Barolo Castiglione.
“.. is easily as good as many other producers’ serious Barolos at twice the price..” Max Allen, The Australian.
Jancis Robinson on the 2016 vintage in Piedmont … “Piemonte produced excellent quality wine in 2016, with ripeness to match the very good 2015 but firmer tannin and higher acidity. Ideal harvest conditions allowed the Nebbiolo to ripen fully, and yields were higher than average too.”
Decanter: “Unlike other parts of Italy and northern Europe, the 2016 growing season in Piedmont was mostly dry and warm, with enough rain at the right times and ideal conditions for the region’s most important grape, Nebbiolo. Some vintners are comparing it to 2004, others to 2001, both excellent vintages.”
Exceptional 2016 vintage (widely anticipated vintage that will be talked about for a long time to come!) … more classic than the warmer 2015 vintage … this is the finest young Perbacco I have tasted from Vietti. Palate shows incredible tension at this early stage, boding well for a long life in bottle. The tannins are ripe, silky (and typically for Nebbiolo) are palate coating. The acidity is poised and gives added length. Delicious now, and a keeper. Seriously do not miss a case! Enjoy it with hearty stews, roasted red meats and sharp aged cheeses.
