Tellurian Wines certainly is a rising star of Victoria’s Heathcote wine region renowned for Shiraz. Established in 2002 by Ian Hopkins and planting vineyards on western slopes of Mt Camel range overlooking township of Tolleen. Since first vintage produced in 2008 they have certainly hit the ground running!
The ancient deep rich Cambrian soils of Heathcote and meticulous attention in the vineyard and winery under Tobias Ansted since 2006 are paying dividends – winning the coveted 5 star winery rating by James Halliday’s Wine Companion.
The Redline Shiraz 2016 comprises select small parcels from the Tellurian Estate vines and Tuohey vineyard on eastern side of Mt Camel range.
2016 growing season was ideal resulting in intense full flavoured fruit retaining wonderful natural acidity with minimal intervention winemaking to capture the essence of the site and 10 months maturation in second use French oak
This 2016 Tellurian Redline Shiraz is an impressive expression of Heathcote Shiraz. Its full bodied and overflows with rich dark plummy fruit flavours, a lick of dark chocolate, hints of minerally tar (a characteristic of the region) and balanced by hints of refreshing red fruits as well. Delicious …. For a new entry level shiraz this shows the true class of this producer!
Reviews for the 2015 … 90 points, James Halliday’s 2018 Australian Wine Companion “Heathcote’s voice of dank earthy tannin and molten dark fruit composure, is married nicely to bitter chocolate lift and tapenade. The wine flows along nicely, unfettered by a hint of reduction at the rear.”
90 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “The entry to the Tellurian shiraz range. It sees no new oak. It’s matured in mostly used French oak (90%) with some used American oak employed too. Fruit is to the fore but it’s well shaped too. It doesn’t run too loose. Plum, graphite, gum leaf and warm redcurrant. It’s quite reductive through the back half but for the most part it’s positive. Feels generous. Creamy mouthfeel doesn’t hurt either. Will be popular.”
