Stefano Lubiana Estate Pinot Noir 2018
Fine Tasmanian Pinot. 95 points, Halliday.
Steve and Monique Lubiana established the estate in 1990 in Granton in the south of Tasmania. They have since built a reputation as one of the vanguard of Australian winegrowers, pushing boundaries with viticulture and winemaking techniques. Their beautiful vineyard on the banks of the Derwent was Tasmania’s first to be certified biodynamic. They have refined their range, which centres upon clear, characterful expressions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and world-class Tasmanian sparkling wines. They have continued to improve the vineyard and honed techniques in the winery, imbuing all the wines with greater texture and personality to make the most of the bright, natural acidity and transparent fruit that are the hallmark of Tasmania. Certified organic, biodynamic – Tasmania’s first.
‘The range under Stefano Lubiana’s banner is lengthy & the highlights are many. While there might be familiarity & finesse in much of Lubiana’s current collection of wines, there’s more excitement to come.’ – Mike Bennie, Gourmet Traveller WINE
100% certified biodynamic, estate-grown, single-vineyard Pinot Noir from a mix of two terroirs: grey gravelly loams over clay and red loam over gravel. Fruit is hand picked and sorted by hand on a vibrating table. Matured in French oak for 8-10 months.
From the winemakers about this wine: “Our Estate Pinot Noir is always a wine that needs time to show its true colours. It is made for the long haul, with ample tannin and acidity as well as fruit density to last the distance. Densely packed layers of aroma on the nose, with a strikingly intense palate, are supported by especially vibrant and luscious fruit notes and fine tannin structure. A wine that will continue to open and grow with time in the bottle”. – Steve & Monique Lubiana
95 points. Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion 2021 “A rocking, rolling, fruit pastille-charged, filigree-fine pinot noir from a winemaker who always delivers. An upbeat entry with small red berries, toasted spice, orange rind aromas. Class act throughout from the tight coils of concentrated fruit, supple, even-handed tannins to smooth-knit oak. With texture and presence.”
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “I’m tasting this alongside a Burgundy of the same vintage, of about the same price, and this wine has less oak, and is much lighter in colour. If you had them both in the glass, and asked, which is the ‘New World’ wine, then you might guess the wrong way round, at least by colour, and maybe smell. Thoroughly charming style of Pinot Noir with red berries, a little undergrowth and spice, plus a pencil/mineral thing happening, which is a lovely addition. It’s light, but firm and nudges you gently with tannin, cool acidity, perhaps some orange rind coming through on a long finish. It’s savoury, but has purity of fruit too, if that makes any sense. Feels like it will build in bottle very nicely.”
