Sons of Eden Pumpa Cabernet Shiraz 2014
Classy Cabernet-esque Rouge!
Named as a tribute to Len Pumpa, a pioneering Eden Valley grower back in the 1920s who preserved the vineyards that they are custodians of today. Co-owners, Corey Ryan (cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 years) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) have weaved their magic with this release.
A fine blend of Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 78%, Shiraz 19%, Tempranillo 3% varieties (50 odd year old vineyard with minuscule yields 1- 2 ton per acre) followed by 15 months in predominantly French oak…. Plush aromatic dark cherry fruit complemented by cassis, cedar and wintergreen notes of cabernet sauvignon and a touch of tempranillo which adds a savoury undertone and softens the fine grained and textured tannins. A soft velvety texture with great length of flavour is a reflection of how well these varieties from Eden Valley marry together.
Another great vintage in 2014. Cabernet fruit from northern Eden Valley grown on terra rossa soils produced delicious cassis cabernet characters with the long slow ripening season. Shiraz came from Moculta in Eden valley and a dash of Tempranillo create delicious savouriness to the palate. This is very classy cabernet-esque rouge!
From the winemaker: “Bright cassis and red cherry aromas surround a bouquet of coffee bean and black olives. A velvety textured palate with great length of flavour and roundness. The dash of Tempranillo contributes subtle savoury nuance to the finish of the palate, approachable now but will reward further cellaring.”
