Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico 2016
Dream vintage 2016 Do not miss!
“Despite being located in one of the very best areas in Chianti Classico & boasting a superb track record, Rocca di Montegrossi remains one of the most under-the-radar estates in Chianti Classico, and Italy, for that matter. Proprietor Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi crafts deep, powerful wines that capture the essence of Monti, a sub-zone of Gaiole that has long been prized for the personality & pedigree of its reds. The estate’s Chianti Classico is often one of the best wines in its class, while the flagship San Marcellino & Geremia are reliably outstanding.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Located at Monti in Chianti (Gaiole), considered one of the region’s grand crus, Rocca di Montegrossi is named after the historic fortress (La Rocca) built by Marco’s ancestor, Geremia, during the Longobard period (600-800 AD). Marco is part of the Ricasoli family that wrote the story of Chianti Classico, creating the formula for the wine we know today at the site of what is now his San Marcellino vineyard. The soil here is incredibly rocky, forcing the roots deep and resulting in naturally low yields. Marco farms organically and has built his own large cisterns to gather rainwater, along with using biofuel for machinery.
Chianti Classico is made with 5% each of Canaiolo and Colorino, aged in tonneaux and barriques for twelve months. The fruity aroma is classic Sangiovese with notes of cherry and wild berry, the palate harmonious, well-structured and lightly tannic.
Of the 2016 vintage in Chianti Antonio Galloni for Vinous Media said this: “As good (or better) as the 2015s are, the 2016s have the potential to surpass them. A balanced growing season with no shock events produced a set of truly exceptional, highly promising wines. The 2016s are distinguished by their superb aromatic presence, silky tannins, layered fruit and fabulous sense of harmony. The 2016s I have tasted so far point to a high quality vintage that may very well turn out to be profound.”
92 points – Antonio Galloni – Vinous Media “The 2016 Chianti Classico is a very serious wine in its peer group. Rich, vivid and beautifully layered, the Chianti Classico will give readers a very good look at just how compelling 2016 is as a vintage. Sweet red cherry, tobacco and menthol notes open up in the glass, but more than anything else, Rocca di Montegrossi’s Chianti Classico is a wine of true character. It will age gracefully for a number of years.”
