Description
Remelluri is a breathtakingly beautiful place nestled under the Sierra Cantabria mountain range above 600 m altitude. The estate is located east of Labistida 15 mins drive east of Haro on the way to San Vincente. Steeped in history the story dates back to the 10th century, when Condé Aláves Erramel and his ‘Erramelluri’ farm took shape. It grew during the 14th century when monks made the first wine here.
Jaime Rodriguez Salis and Amaya Hernandorena acquired the estate in 1967, reuniting the lands that had been broken up over time. Here the scenic slopes of Sierra de Toloño stand over the valleys of Valderemelluri, La Granja and Villaescusa. These south-facing vineyards are shielded from frost and winds by the mountains, having a different microclimate from most of Rioja Alta and Alavesa.
Rodriguez and son Telmo, one of Spain’s greatest viticulturists, have restored Remelluri to 105 hectares under vine. Telmo Rodriguez brought great changes to this historic estate by introducing biodynamic farming as well as working with the surrounding growers to formulate the Lindes (‘borders’) de Remelluri concept. The concept explores the differences between the villages of Labastida and San Vicente by vinifying these separately to express their special personalities. A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and a touch Viura and Malvasía Riojana. The 2010 dream growing season has delivered a treat here a marvelous wine of depth of fruit, balance and elegance. 95 points James Suckling “A wine with beautiful finesse and depth. Dark fruits, dark chocolate, hazelnut and floral character. Polished and refined. Full body. Long and beautiful. Tasty finish. The first recent vintage 100% made by Telmo Rodriguez. Drink or hold. (7/2015)”
93 points, Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate “The wine that represents the house style and also the biggest volume here with around 350,000 bottles produced is the 2010 Reserva which was cropped from an almost perfect growing season. A blend of the reds Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and the whites Viura and Malvasía Riojana, it fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and oak vats then matured in French oak barrels for 17 months. The nose has earthy aromas and notes of ripe orange peel giving old-style character to the wine marked by very well-integrated oak and an obvious Rioja character. There are cherries, plums and spices with licorice and ink aromas. The day after, it has more strawberries with very good freshness, so the evolution in bottle should be good. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and good acidity that ends with sweet fruit flavors and something earthy, very pleasant and easy to drink. It grows on you. I visited the historical property of Remelluri, an estate On the outskirts of the village of Labastida in Álava. It is the source of one of the first modern Rioja wines created by Jaime Rodríguez and his wife Amaya Hernandorena in 1968. The full name of the company is Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, Farm of Our Lady of Remelluri, as it had been a small settlement created in the 10th century. (4/2015)”
92 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous, (9/2014) “Vivid ruby. Red berries, cherry pit and potpourri on the pungent, spice-accented nose. Sappy and concentrated, offering vibrant raspberry and bitter cherry lavors that become sweeter with air and take a turn toward darker fruits. Shows excellent focus and thrust on the persistent finish, which features silky tannins and a seductive floral pastille quality. I’d love to taste this wine and its elegant ’09 sibling side-by-side in another five years.”
17.5/20 points, Julia Harding, Jancisrobinson.com.au (8/2015) “Deep crimson. Mix of red and black fruit and a dusty/rocky overlay. Very definite cedary, spicy dark fruit on the palate. Finest of dry, paper-fine tannins. Some oak spice and sweetness on the finish but very subtle. Fresh and long. Great persistence.”
