Longhop Shiraz 2020

Description

Longhop is a winemaking venture between 2 high school friends, Tim Freeland and Dominic Torzi (of leading Eden Valley winery, Torzi Matthews) and these guys continue to shake things up as far as the quality to price wine ratio goes…this wine (sourced from 3 Adelaide Plains vineyards) is extraordinary for the price.

The former Gawler high school mates seized upon an idea in 2002 of salvaging some of the last remaining old vine vineyards in the Adelaide Plains and making icon wines from that region. Vineyards were secured, old vines a priority. Their small band of growers have since embraced the ideal of delivering premium grapes in order to showcase the power and rich fruit flavours the Adelaide Plains and adjoining Mt Lofty Ranges has to offer. The wines are made with minimal intervention. Open fermented and basket pressed. No fining or filtration is used prior to bottling.

From vines aged 16 – 50+ years. Whole berry ferment in five ton open top fermenters with soft pump overs and minimal hand plunging. On skins for six days, then basket pressed into young seasoned oak with ferment finishing off in barrel. Matured in French and American oak. Two rackings prior to blending and unfiltered bottling.  No fining agents used, Vegan friendly
Full bodied style, plump mouth filling flavour with a rich palate of chocolate, dark plum, leather, mulberry and spice, well integrated cedary oak and firm deep tannin structure. Very drinkable now, cellar to 7 years.  Alc/Vol: 14.5%

From the winemaker about this release: “Rolling into the 16th consecutive vintage release of our most favourite shiraz. We are happy to say the tradition continues. The tradition of delivering a rich full bodied South Australian Shiraz that packs a punch but is easy on the wallet. Dark fruited goodness, easing into leathery and cedary notes, big on flavour, mouth-feel and length.”

Full-bodied, full of dark fruit and dark chocolate, but also, imagine, some black pepper! Tannin is firm and grainy, it’s warm and generous, but keeps itself tidy all up, and has a fleshy finish of good length. Hearty and full of character.”
