What a remarkable jouney for Clonakilla. When John Kirk first planted vines in 1971 who would have thought it would be celebrated as one of Australia’s finest vineyards! Their first Shiraz Viognier was made in 1998 – by 2005 it was deemed ‘Outstanding’ in Langton’s Australian Wine Classification … by 2010 it was promoted to “Exceptional” .. up there with Grange and Hill of Grace! Murrumbateman & Canberra wine region are all about cool climate shiraz … complex layering of raspberry, violets, spice, cracked pepper, roast game with darker blackberry, blackcurrant and aniseed in warmer years. Clonakilla’s shiraz across the board including the Hilltops and O’Riada remind me of syrah at it’s best from famed ‘Cote Rotie’ in France’s Northern Rhone.
Sean O’Riada is one of the heroes of modern Ireland. A talented musician and composer, he is credited with taking traditional Irish music out of the kitchens and pubs of Ireland and putting it on the concert stages of the world. He died, prematurely, in 1971, the year Clonakilla was established by John Kirk. He was John’s cousin and music is alive and well in the family bloodline.
From the winery: “The 2016 vintage was generous and early. Late summer temperatures were consistently warmer than average and the vines produced some of the most intense dark berry fruit we have seen from the Canberra District. The O’Riada is made from fruit picked from our estate vineyard and other excellent sites in Murrumbateman and Hall. It’s a quintessential Canberra Shiraz. Ripe red berries and plenty of spice.”
93+ points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front: “75% comes from estate grown shiraz/viognier. 25% from comes from the vineyard of Phillip (and wife Carol) Williams.
It’s another beauty. So pretty, so well fruited, so well managed as it ripples through the mouth. It tastes of peanuts and chocolate, black cherries and anise. It has a floral lift. It’s succulent. Tannin is superfine. Oak is high quality and entirely positive. It needs a little time to come together but there’s no question over this wine’s quality. No hesitation in placing a ‘buy’ recommendation.”
Nick Stock for james.suckling.com “The definition here is impressive, smooth and ebulliently ripe red berry and plum fruits with pastry-like nuances and gently spicy waves. Rich. Effortless appeal and flows smoothly along on ripe, detailed tannins. Great balance. Drink now to 2028+”
Huon Hooke “Deepish red/purple colour with a fragrant herb, lightly spicy and charmingly floral bouquet, which is at a remove from the simple grapy styles. The wine comes into its own on the palate, where it is deliciously easy to drink
with fine-grained, subtle tannins and medium-weight. Red fruits, spices, violets. Lovely wine, ready to enjoy. It’s 100% Clonakilla in style.”
