Description
The Fratelli Cigliuti winery is situated on the Serraboella hill, some 350 metres above sea level overlooking Neive, one of three villages responsible for producing Barbaresco. Renato inherited his father’s 6.5 hectare property which remains family owned and run and is now into its fifth generation with daughters Claudia and Sylvia. Winemaking techniques lean towards the traditional. Estate-grown, handpicked grapes are fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, then aged in larger Slavonian oak barrels along with some barriques. Dolcetto and Nebbiolo grapes grow in the calcareous soils of the southwest-facing vineyards, while Barbera is cultivated on clayey sites with a south-eastern exposure. The wines show great complexity, minerality and personality.
“Cigliuti is arguably the most under the radar estate in Barbaresco when it comes to looking at the wines and comparing quality with visibility in the market… Silvia and Claudia [Cigliuti] continue to turn out absolutely gorgeous wines. ” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
100% Nebbiolo from the Serraboella cru in Neive. The site sits on calcareous soils at 350m above sea level, with a southwestern exposure. The vines are aged between 25 and 55 years old and yields are about 4 to 4.5 tonnes per hectare. Fermentation and maceration takes place in steel vats at controlled temperatures. The wine is matured for 26 months in Slavonian oak casks and mid-sized French oak casks.
93+ points, Antonio Galloni “The 2012 Barbaresco Serraboella is deep, fleshy and pliant, with lovely concentration and plenty of nuance, all in the mid-weight style of the year. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, mint and dark spices all meld into the supple finish. Readers will need to be patient, though, as the 2012s need time to fully come together. The 2012 was aged 70% in cask and 30% in tonneau. This is everything one could want from a Barbaresco from this part of the zone.”
93 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Sweet cinnamon spice, liquorice and fennel, dark cherry. Medium bodied, smooth and polished with fine grainy tannin, layers of spice over ripe cherry, pleasing freshness and a mineral inflected finish of fine length. Wears its oak a little too proudly as a young wine, though I’m sure that will settle down with a few more years in bottle.”
