Chrismont Casa Rosso 2017
From leading King Valley producer, this juicy savoury blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon is a bargain.
This Italian blend of Sangiovese and Merlot really surprised me. It is truly delicious and cries out for Mediterranean fare (think Italian sausage, olives, lasagne and pizza!) Made by leading King Valley vigneron Arnie Pizzini (Christmont Wines). It sings with dark cherries, wild blackberries and a hint of aniseed with depth and savoury complexity too. This is my new vino rosso de la Casa.
Merlot, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Sauvignon all contribute to the making of this fruity dry red. The grapes are crushed and fermented then left to macerate on skins for up to 10 days before being drained into tanks to complete malolactic fermentation. The new wine is then racked into a combination of older French oak barriques and stainless steel tanks for 12 months maturation before being blended and prepared for bottling. The wine is released after an extra six to twelve months age in bottle.
CASA Rosso 2017 is a vibrant dark-red coloured wine with crimson edges and dark red fruits of cherry, mulberry and hints of herb and spice aromas on the nose. Its rich front palate is a mouthful of dark cherry and chocolate, with savoury, textured undertones and a soft, well-rounded finish. 14% alc.
