Description
Founded by Primo Pacenti in 1962,in 1987 Primo was joined by son-in-law Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, and since 2001, Canalicchio di Sopra has been in the highly capable, thoughtful hands of Pier Luigi’s three children, Francesco, Simonetta and Marco.
The Rosso di Montalcino and the Brunello di Montalcino are based on the parcels of Canalicchio and Montosoli, located on the northern side of Montalcino, and which combined total 19 hectares planted. All wines are aged in medium sized Slavonian oak botti.
From the winery about this wine: “Produced mostly from our youngest vineyards, it represents our calling card for Canalicchio di Sopra wines: a young, fruity, and versatile expression of our Sangiovese.”
The soils of the Canalicchio parcels are largely clay with pebbles and a strong mineral content, resulting in wines of aromatic intensity, opulence and minerality. It is the extraordinary elegance, latent power, balance and silky tannins of the Casaccia parcel which for some years now have seen it bottled separately. The Montosoli soils are marl with very high mineral components, clay loam texture with higher levels of lime, with the pebbly texture increasing the pH. The wines show great structure, minerality and sapidity.
The 2019 “Canalicchio di Sopra” Rosso di Montalcino DOC celebrates the intensity of a generous vintage in a more
immediate and enjoyable version. 2019 was a year of great maturation where the balance of the grapes was
guaranteed by steady and balanced weather conditions thus creating the requirements for a great maturation. The
purity of the fruit expresses itself in a pronounced and bold way with a surprising youthfulness reminiscent of the
vinosity and concentration of the vintage. The youngest vineyards used for this Rosso di Montalcino along with a small
selection from the oldest vineyards guaranteed all the exuberance of this vintage, which, together with the freshness
and well-balanced acidity, make for a greatly pleasant union.
91+points, Eric Guido, Vinous “The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino requires a bit of time to blossom in the glass; yet patience is rewarded, as an air of smoky minerals and peppery herbs slowly evolves into a perfumed display of wild strawberries, rose hips and flowery undergrowth. This is soft and supple, seeming almost fleshy at first, yet it gains harmony through a savory mix of mineral-tinged red berries and spices. A subtle film of fine tannin lingers, yet the mouth waters for more, as this literally buzzes with residual energy while inner florals slowly fade.”
