Bodegas Exopto Rioja Bozeto de Exopto Rose 2016
Grenache & Tempranillo .. a wine for pure drinking pleasure!
Bodegas Exopto is one of the new wave of modern winegrowers and quality wine makers in Rioja – Outstanding, well tended, cool vineyards on rocky soils, very old vines and low yields (the total opposite to the trend of mass produced, American oaked wine of the region).
Passionate artisan winemaker, Tom Puyaubert (in fact a Frenchman who married an Espanola!) is fanatical in his focus on their vineyard: 50-100 year old Tempranillo and 70 year old Garnacha vineyard located in Rioja Alavesa (600 metres altitude and the coolest in Rioja). He uses French oak and is producing small quantities of top quality vino (3000 cases – miniscule production for Rioja). Robert Parker’s right hand man, Jay Millar from Wine Advocate is a fan: “Exopto Cellars three new releases are all outstanding”. No doubt about it Exopto is a Riojan star in the making!
A couple of years in the bottle has done this wine no harm at all, bringing more savouriness and complexity. Exopto’s 2016 Bozeto rosé is crafted from 50% Garnacha and 50% Tempranillo. The grapes come from a single plot of mature vines (30-50 years old), located at altitude in the village of Ábalos (Rioja Alta). Made with the direct-press method, and fermented in tank with natural yeasts, this crisp, vibrant rosé succeeds in bringing out the mouthwatering fruitiness of the Garnacha think juicy nectarines, citrus offset by the subtle, scented complexity of the Tempranillo. Time has now brought in some grenadine fruit and a wonderful more-ish savoury, earthy almost Provençal lick, on the finish . A wine for pure drinking pleasure, ideally with a plate of charcuterie. Si senor this is delicious!
