According to Stephen George: “With a climate similar to parts of Burgundy it was no surprise that Chardonnay was first planted during the Adelaide Hills’ wine revival in the early 1980’s…… Our own chardonnay vines are more than 25 years old and our winemaking aim is for a complex style of chardonnay with clean and healthy new-world fruit complemented by old-world wine-making techniques….was made from dry-grown, low yielding grapes with fermentation in new and seasoned French oak using natural and cultured yeasts. This was followed by the avoidance of malolactic-fermentation, stirring of and maturation on yeast lees.”

About Domaine Leroy:
It is almost impossible to put into words the significance of Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy and her Domaine Leroy estate in the world of wine. Clive Coates MW poses the rhetorical question: "Is this the greatest estate in Burgundy?" and answers: “How do you determine great? Is it size? Is it quality? Is it price? Is it reputation? Is it the amount of media cover- age?” However, you do compute it, the greatest domaines of Burgundy today must be those under the control of Lalou Bize: The Domaine Leroy and her own Domaine d'Auvenay. The estates of Jadot, Faiveley and Bouchard Pe?re et Fils are far larger; that of Romane?e Conti the most splendid in terms of percentage of grand terroir, but for nobility of it's wines, pride of place must go to Leroy and to Domaine d'Auvenay. Is this Australia's finest Chardonnay?
Cannot add much to the glowing reviews below except to say Decant this profoundly complex and yet ultra fine chardonnay or cellar for a couple of years.

“Bright straw-green; a remarkable wine that has spent two years on lees in a mix of big and small French oak and stainless steel, with one-third going through mlf; still intensely focused and brightly flavoured, with great length; deserves a screwcap or, at least, Diam, for it will quite certainly outlive its closure. .” 96 points. “Bannockburn chardonnay is becoming more and more refined – and, most likely, more and more ageworthy. Great rush of flavour and tang through the finish. Refreshing and exciting. This comes after a seductive, cedary, nectarine-like mid palate. Though of course, back at the start, its alive with (white) peachy, leesy, spicy scent. I loved this wine. Bouquet: Complex bouquet – shows both the citrus characters of ripe, blood orange/pink grapefruit, together with some slightly herbal, cashew/nutty, mealy and lees characters, with subtle oak residing in the background. Complexity shows further layers with slight briny/oyster shell and struck match tones. A heady bouquet that is complex and powerful!
Palate: Solid weight, yet only 12.8%, with generous sweet fruit up front, together with lots of natural acidity. This grows along the palate line; textured mouth feel; solid acidity, balanced with the ample juicy primary fruit. Seamless line and length, already exhibiting a long finish.
Overall Impression: As with prior Curly Flat Chardonnays, defined by its origins - young but complex, layered, textured; solid structure, yet it has relatively low alcohol (12.8%) It will build further complexity with time in bottle.

Cellaring: Generous fruit allows for early drinking, but will age for many years. Probably peaking about 2016.

Father and son team Jean-Hugues and Guilhem Goisot are fanatical about their certified biodynamic vineyards. Located in the Yonne region of France (a few kms south west of Chablis) their wines are everything you'd expect from a great Chablis for a fraction of the price. Leading authority on Burgundy, Allen Meadows of Burghound said "No one but no one delivers more quality for the price than Goisot. The quality is flat out amazing.."

One of Goisot's prestige cuvees (bottled only in the finest years) - 100% Chardonnay from the Gondonne vineyard in Côte d’Auxerre. Cutting were taken from the best vines ('massal selection") from the Les Clos Grand Cru Chablis holdings of Raveneau and Dauvissat (both families have close ties with the Goisot family.

In Gondonne you find lots of exogyra virgula (small fossilised shells) in the dense soils of blue clay and limestone. A superb site that typically produces the most intense of Goisot's three prestige single vineyard Auxerre Chardonnays. The Goisot family believe this terroir gets closest to Les Clos in style, although we thought it more reminiscent of Puligny-Montrachet – this stunning wine was very fine with ripe citrus, stone fruit and lime blossom characters with intensity and impeccable length. An extraordinary bargain for the quality and price.

Burghound was also impressed in his review:

".... discreet aromas of mildly exotic yellow fruit, spiced pear and white peach. The rich, round, supple and quite forward flavors possess excellent volume and fine mid-palate concentration ...the very dry and explosively long finish. Like several of these ‘09s, this delivers simply knockout quality for what it is." 91 points RRP $60
