Daryl Groom (former Penfolds winemaker) has done well here! Intense mouthfilling tropical fruit cascading from refreshing citrus to pineapple and passionfruit with balanced salad green characters. More tropical and less pungent in style than NZ sauvignon blanc. 100 % estate grown fruit from their Lenswood vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. The '09 vintage is being hailed as one of the best for Adelaide Hills in yonks!- the pefect vintage, a long hot season but no heatwave like in 08 - so no disappointments here! Daryl Groom was the Penfolds winemaker for years and has spent the last decade as chief winemaker at Geyser peak in the Napa. His sister and brother-in-law David look after their vineyards in Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills and Kalimna in the Barossa. Daryl comes home regularly to make the wines. His wines are rich and elegant -he does not do jammy, tannic or oaky wines. Another Halliday 5 Stars! Intensity and balance is what his wines are about and they are the Best of the Barossa!

White Rhone varieties love the Canberra growing conditions – hot days and cold nights – and Bryan and Jocelyn Martin’s Marsanne in particular is superb. Leaner and more delicate than previous vintages but still with complex notes of stonefruit, nuts and citrus. So darn good.

Gary Walsh from Winorama gives it 92/100 – “It's mid-weight like a Chardonnay, has a touch of warmth poking through and finishes dry and flinty. A paradoxical wine - it's a great food style because it's dry and fairly neutral but it also challenges you and demands your attention with every sip. I think it needs time in bottle to show its best but meanwhile you might like to decant it for best results."

James Kellie (formerly of Howard Park) has done incredibly well here producing extraordinary intensity of fruit in this semillon sauvignon blanc blend. 100% free run juice from fruit sourced from higher altitude cool coastal sites of Denmark in WA. A portion of each variety was barrel fermented in large French oak to give texture. Minimal fining. Intense nose producing aroma/flavours of lemon zest, snow peas, gooseberries, fresh herbs and tropical fruit. This mouthwatering wine is top shelf.

Their 2008 release was also listed as a Best Buy under $20 in Oct /Nov Australian Gourmet Traveller wine. The 2009 vintage was a better season overall, long and consistent.
What amazes me is the balance and complexity of this Sauvignon Blanc which held its head high when we tasted it alongside Isabel Sauvignon Blanc which retails for $28. Staggering quality and value. RRP: $20 ( See straight case special)

Clark Estate from Marlborough, New Zealand is a boutique family run winery, making unique single vineyard wines from the Awatere Valley in Marlborough, NZ. This low yielding vineyard uses sustainable practices to produce fine aromatic whites. The Awatare Valley is renowned for its distinctive minerally, stone-fruit driven style of wines. It is also famous for its north-westerly wind which in summer dries out the soil which naturally controls yield as the vines shut down to protect themselves from the strong winds. Also the lack of underground water in the Awatare’s free draining glacial gravel soils limits the yield of its vines resulting in intense, concentrated flavours. Quinta de la Rosa and the Bergqvist family have been making port from their spectacular steep-terraced vineyards on the banks of the Douro (nr Pinhao) since the early 19th century and since the decline of port consumption they have been making some impressive red table wine…Jorge Moreira, winemaker of the year by the Revista dos Vinhos (the “Decanter magazine of Portugal”at their annual dinner in Feb 2010) since taking the reins as winemaker in 2002 has taken the quality of their wines to another level.

Jorge sourced fruit (white port varieties Codega and Rabigato) from higher vineyards above the Upper Douro … explosive citrus freshness, flintiness with round savoury character that is incredibly more-ish! Always a true sign of quality when you taste a wine with a friend over lunch and before you know it the bottle is gone! Loved this Portuguese white!

A complex and exciting blend of Semillon, Marsanne, Ugni Blanc, Vermentino and Viognier. A savoury Mediterranean style white with a subtle yet deep bouquet of citrus rind, almond nougat, hay and frangipani flowers and pear. Medium bodied, lovely mid palate texture and freshness! Decant this wine.
When quizzed on the name of this wine, Pete Schell said that most wines seem to fall into a “masculine” or a “feminine” style. When he first made this wine back in 2001, he felt it couldn’t be categorised – it was a bit of both. Like the song “Lola” says “she walked like a woman and talked like a man”.

Beautiful purity of fruit ranging from floral, apple, lemon and limes balanced by perfect acidity. Their 08 was rated 94 pts by Halliday. 09 was a great vintage and we are thrilled with this. Phenomenal stuff.

Each year, Jed’s three young Australian winemakers travel to the Uco Valley in Argentina to craft wines that express the unique characters of this acclaimed alpine region. They were hugely impressed with the Uco Valley in Mendoza (450 year history of winemaking) as a unique place to make wine with its fresh snowmelt water (from the Andes), crisp mountain air, high altitude ( 1250 m) and pure UV light. Mendoza is famous for producing the world’s finest Malbec but it is the cooler sites of Uco Valley that have recently been discovered as the best. This pristine environment produces naturally balanced wines which require minimal intervention in both the vineyard and winery.
