Ravensworth Marsanne 2007

Ravensworth Marsanne 2007

White Rhone varieties love the Canberra growing conditions – hot days and cold nights – and Bryan and Jocelyn Martin’s Marsanne in particular is superb. Leaner and more delicate than previous vintages but still with complex notes of stonefruit, nuts and citrus. So darn good.

Gary Walsh from Winorama gives it 92/100 – “It's mid-weight like a Chardonnay, has a touch of warmth poking through and finishes dry and flinty. A paradoxical wine - it's a great food style because it's dry and fairly neutral but it also challenges you and demands your attention with every sip. I think it needs time in bottle to show its best but meanwhile you might like to decant it for best results."

"This is a very fine marsanne. It’s long, slatey, shelly and delicate, the flavour of it interesting and the cellarworthiness of it obvious. I’m an instant fan". Drink: 2008-2012. 94 points. Campbell Mattinson Winefront Monthly.

Arlewood Sussex Loc Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Arlewood Sussex Loc Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Leading Margaret River winery, Arlewood Estate’s Sussex Loc cuvee is an extraordinary wine: - A blend of their best semillon and sauvignon blanc with 18 mths maturation in French oak. Succulent peaches, nectarines, lemon curd and almond toasty french oak. Concentrated depth of fruit and beautifully balanced oak and lingering lemon kick on the finish. Blue Gold Sydney International wine show. This wine has often been very favourably compared to Bordeaux heavyweights at several times the price. If you enjoy Grand Cru Chablis you will love this wine for it's lazer like citrus zing. 2006 was a top vintage for white wine in Margaret River ( too cold for reds!) so this wine is more steely and racy than the 2005. Needs to be decanted. 5 Stars and Top of Class Wine State Magazine July 08. Cellar until 2016
RRP $40

Some Reviews

Curtis Marsh, (writer for Asia Sentinel which has more than 5 million readers) raved about the 2005 wine and wrote “ Arlewood ranks as my top selection for the “Must-Have barrel-fermented Semillon – Sauvignon Blanc of the Year” as it is exceptionally well priced and outclasses all the white Bordeaux Blanc’s that I tried, all several times the price of the Arlewood.”

In February 09 the Inaugural 2005 International Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc tasting was held in Margaret River and the 2005 SUssec Loc was narrowly pipped at the posts by Bordeaux heavyweights Haut Brion, Laville Haut Brion, Haut Lafitte, de Chevalier.. A stunning result in a blindtasting of 21 superstar wines particularly as all the Bordeaux blanc’s are several times the price!

Muddy Water Unplugged Riesling 2008More Details
Reviews Abound of their 2006 :
A superbly luscious wine that has achieved its remarkable array of honey, tropical and tree-fruit
flavours with the help of bunches selectively harvested to optimise botrytis. Grapes are picked with high sugar levels and fermented to produce a relatively high alcohol level of 12%. Not a full-blown sticky, this is great as an aperitif and has the potential to age well. Muddy Water now makes three outstanding rieslings – a feat that arguably makes it the country’s number one producer, together with Framingham. 5 stars, 96 points, Bob Campbell Gourmet Traveller Wine April/May 2008.

Luscious wine made from hand-selected bunches. A strong honeyed influence is counterbalanced by fresh acidity. A restrained sticky - better as an aperitif than as a match with sweet desert.

Clark Estate Single Vineyard Awatare Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2009More Details
Clark Estate from Marlborough, New Zealand is a boutique family run winery, making unique single vineyard wines from the Awatere Valley in Marlborough, NZ. This low yielding vineyard uses sustainable practices to produce fine aromatic whites. The Awatare Valley is renowned for its distinctive minerally, stone-fruit driven style of wines. It is also famous for its north-westerly wind which in summer dries out the soil which naturally controls yield as the vines shut down to protect themselves from the strong winds. Also the lack of underground water in the Awatare’s free draining glacial gravel soils limits the yield of its vines resulting in intense, concentrated flavours. Hot days and very cool nights means ripe fruit with fresh, crisp acidity and great balance.

Coates Consonance Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Coates Consonance Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Duane Coates is one of the quiet achievers of the Australian Wine Scene ( Masters in Oenology and an MBA from Adelaide University & soon to become a Master of Wine). His winemaking philosophy is simple: the highest quality fruit from sustainable vineyards ( some organic), harvest when properly ripe and a natural winemaking approach (minimal intervention - wild yeasts, unfined, no additions of tannin, enzyme and acid).

Huon Hooke said: “ Every wine I’ve tasted of McLaren Vale’s Duane Coates has been excellent…” Highly impressive wines – a style that bridges the gap between fruit driven Australian style and savoury complex wines of old world Europe.

A blend of 67% barrel-fermented Semillon (25% new French) from Mt Compass and Adelaide Hills, with 33% Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc fermented in stainless steel. Highly recommend this. RRP: $24

Dou Rosa Branco White 2007

Dou Rosa Branco White 2007

Quinta de la Rosa and the Bergqvist family have been making port from their spectacular steep-terraced vineyards on the banks of the Douro (nr Pinhao) since the early 19th century and since the decline of port consumption they have been making some impressive red table wine…Jorge Moreira, winemaker of the year by the Revista dos Vinhos (the “Decanter magazine of Portugal”at their annual dinner in Feb 2010) since taking the reins as winemaker in 2002 has taken the quality of their wines to another level.

Jorge sourced fruit (white port varieties Codega and Rabigato) from higher vineyards above the Upper Douro … explosive citrus freshness, flintiness with round savoury character that is incredibly more-ish! Always a true sign of quality when you taste a wine with a friend over lunch and before you know it the bottle is gone! Loved this Portuguese white!

Spinifex Lola 2009

Spinifex Lola 2009

A complex and exciting blend of Semillon, Marsanne, Ugni Blanc, Vermentino and Viognier. A savoury Mediterranean style white with a subtle yet deep bouquet of citrus rind, almond nougat, hay and frangipani flowers and pear. Medium bodied, lovely mid palate texture and freshness! Decant this wine.
When quizzed on the name of this wine, Pete Schell said that most wines seem to fall into a “masculine” or a “feminine” style. When he first made this wine back in 2001, he felt it couldn’t be categorised – it was a bit of both. Like the song “Lola” says “she walked like a woman and talked like a man”.
James Halliday wrote in his 2010 Wine Companion: "..delivers a distinctly European styled wine... full on the finish, texture is the key. 91 points" RRP $28

Gisselbrecht Riesling Vin D\'Alsace 2007

Gisselbrecht Riesling Vin D'Alsace 2007

The Gisselbrecht family has been producing wines in Alsace since the 17th century. Today the family owns around 17 hectares of land in the best locations of Dambach la ville. The Vineyards have been acquired throughout the centuries patiently, as the best parcels became free. They are situated in the areas of Dambach la ville in the middle of the wine road in Alsace and the surrounding villages named Epfig, Scherwiller, Chatenois, Nothalten. The family also owns parcels in the Grand Cru Frankstein and also buys some grapes in the Grand cru Muenchberg.

8 wks of perfect weather before harvest lead to healthy ripe fruit with beautiful acidity (in 2007 many of France’s wine regions were awash with rain but Alsace was spared thanks to Alsace’s sheltered location between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine river)

Elegant aroma of floral, of green apple, mint, and grapefruit. Rich and yet delicate and clean on the palate....love the lemon fresh zing on the finish. Sante! Serve with fish, seafood, goats cheese and charcuterie. RRP$35

"A new Schist on the block and pretty handy wine too. It smells of cut apple, faint citrus, some mineral and bit of honeysuckle........ It tastes of apple, a bit of citrus and again that minerality but it’s pretty much soft and easy going with some attractive textural grip to compensate..... In short, it’s good to drink young " 90 Points Gary Walsh of Winefront

Jed Pinot Grigio 2009

Jed Pinot Grigio 2009

Each year, Jed’s three young Australian winemakers travel to the Uco Valley in Argentina to craft wines that express the unique characters of this acclaimed alpine region. They were hugely impressed with the Uco Valley in Mendoza (450 year history of winemaking) as a unique place to make wine with its fresh snowmelt water (from the Andes), crisp mountain air, high altitude ( 1250 m) and pure UV light. Mendoza is famous for producing the world’s finest Malbec but it is the cooler sites of Uco Valley that have recently been discovered as the best. This pristine environment produces naturally balanced wines which require minimal intervention in both the vineyard and winery.

An early picking provides zippy freshness followed by a later picking for fruit richness. Aromas of juicy nectarine, white peach, hints of spring flowers... Rich purity of fruit, textural on the palate with lovely cool climate zing.RRP $25

Ashton Hills Chardonnay 2007

Ashton Hills Chardonnay 2007

95 POINTS - James Halliday's 2011 Australian Wine Companion. 5 RED STAR WINERY.

“Brilliant green-yellow; the bright bouquet does not fully prepare you for the energy and drive of the long palate, built around grapefruit, nectarine and crunchy acidity. Rating 95“ James Halliday.

According to Stephen George: “With a climate similar to parts of Burgundy it was no surprise that Chardonnay was first planted during the Adelaide Hills’ wine revival in the early 1980’s…… Our own chardonnay vines are more than 25 years old and our winemaking aim is for a complex style of chardonnay with clean and healthy new-world fruit complemented by old-world wine-making techniques….was made from dry-grown, low yielding grapes with fermentation in new and seasoned French oak using natural and cultured yeasts. This was followed by the avoidance of malolactic-fermentation, stirring of and maturation on yeast lees.”

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front:"
....It manages the balance between sharp, tangy acids and fine smooth mouthfeel quite beautifully. It’s lemony and nectarine-like, and yet there’s a smooth, creamy sense to the mid-palate. Add excellent, tangy thrust through the finish and you have a wine destined to drink very well, once it hits maturity. 93 Points."

Can’t go wrong here – this fine chardonnay has the goods and the struture to age for another 5 years. Decant so flavours can unravel..RRP: $50

Ashton Hills Riesling 2008

Ashton Hills Riesling 2008

TROPHY Adelaide Hills Wine Show.

“Best Riesling vintages at their very cool site are the warmest ones…..even the ferocity of the 2008 March heatwave doesn’t seem to have contradicted this view. It’s testament to the quality of early ripening season as well as the considerable vine age (28 years) that grape flavours peaked early allowing picking before sugar and alcohol skyrocketed so avoiding …an unbalanced wines. The 08 shows lime, flowers and bath salts on the nose and has a full yet soft and delicate palate ( fruit purity of lime and lemon)..It finishes with crisp acidity…”. Stephen George.

94 pts – “Excellent overall ..” James Halliday 2010 Australian Wine Companion
