Pira’s vineyards are in the three most prestigious crus in the Serralunga commune: “Margheria,” “Marenca," and “Rionda”. The first Barolo was produced only as recently as 1993, but the winery and winemaker, Giampaolo Pira has received many accolades from the international press since that time. Vinification takes place in horizontal fermentation tanks at a controlled temperature for 7 to 10 days. The wine is refined for 24 months in new barriques made of French oak.
To the eye, Barolo Vigna Rionda has an intense burgundy red colour. The bouquet is very complex and elegant, with subtle suggestions that range from wild berries to sweet tobacco and deep, intriguing balsamic hints. To the palate, the wine is very rich, opulent and balanced, and is remarkably persistent.
