Honest expressions of the terroir of Monforte d'Alba, which generally produces a bigger, more tannic style of Barolo than those from La Morra or Barolo itself. Without doubt, Elio & Gianluca Grasso are one of the great producers of Piedmont. Pedigree and class here. Gambero Rosso 1 star. 100% estate grow fruit. 30 year old vineyard. Nebbiolo and Dolcetto get cold soaked initially to enhance more primary fruit and floral characters. 2010 vintages has produced the goods. Wow..rich fruit with more-ish depth of tar and minerality, great concentration, length and balance. This producer makes the finest dolcetto that I have ever tasted. New 2010 release will not dissappoint. Antonio Galloni ( Robert Parker's Right hand man at The Wine Advocate was very complementary): "The 2010 Dolcetto d’Alba dei Grassi is fabulous. Grasso’s approach in the vineyard gives the Dolcetto just that extra little bit of dimension and complexity to the fruit, without abandoning a true, varietal expression. The wine shows excellent minerality and focus in a tense, wiry style that is typical of the year. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015. Elio Grasso remains the most under-appreciated of Piedmont’s top growers. Make no mistake about it, these wines can easily hold their own with the best from the region. When one factors in price, these are easily some of the finest ageworthy wines on the planet." 90 points. RRP $42
