Don David Reserve Tannat 2009

Vineyard located high in the northern region of Salta (approx 3000 metres altitude). Lovely rich ripe fruit (Made with some carbonic maceration which gives the wine aromatic lift) fined grained tannins and a more-ish savoury tarriness with a hint of licorice. Gorgeous purity of fruit and length of flavour. Very different in style to a French madiran (south west France) where the tannat variety is traditionally made in a more tannic, astringent fashion. My favourite red from our recent Argentine tasting.

The '08 vintage was recently awarded BEST RED WINE IN THE WORLD in the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2010 among nearly 7000 wines from 49 different countries. The 2009 release is a terrific follow up- the growing seasons are very consistent in Salta thanks to the Andes ( create a rain shadow so no rain during harvest) RRP $33
